Another essential service crippled by governments deliberate failure to address asylum policy/immigration structure.

Citizens with a history of insurable employment should be prioritized for public/essential services, with a caveat for people with disabilities etc.

Legal aid board should not have to bare the burden of immigration, other NGOs like the Immigration Council who have deep pockets should.

    3. Last year we had over 18,000 IPAS/Asylum people being processed. This year so far we have less than 8,000, but there’s a backlog of cases that need to be processed.

We’ve accounted for spending over €1b on this issue, and get approx €100m from the EU to offset it, but it’s an issue that’s going to go on for years.

56% of emergency accommodation users last year are IPAS/Asylum, we’re not building enough homes to account for regular demand including regular legal immigration (students/skilled employees/etc), and don’t have enough accommodation to invite trades from all over the world to come here to help us catch up.

Unfortunately without being more proactive at point of entry to reduce the number of people who will want/need to avail of the legal aid board, the issue will continue for them for a very long time, their budget could and should increase YOY going forward though.
