    1. A builder these days for that is going to charge crazy money. Bet you get €80k quotes

I like it but If I were you I’d just do a big pergola with firepit with French doors opening from the house out to it. The amount of actual summer weather we get wouldn’t justify the cost of that room but that’s just me.

I was reading that King Charles of England put one of these into Buckingham Palace recently. He filled it full of old expensive chairs, but the glass cracked, let in the rain and ruined them all.

I guess he never heard that people in glass houses shouldn’t stow thrones.

Know someone who did this and it’s fab. They have a small house but big garden so it really added to their house. Would love one myself but our garden is too small.

Think about where the sun is going to be at different times of day. If the roof is unshaded it’ll become an oven in direct sunlight.

I’m planning on doing something similar but my garden is east facing so in shade in the afternoon and evening

I’ll looking at doing something similar but it’s a pergola mounted to the house with glass sliding doors and a louvered roof with led lighting. There’s a few suppliers out there doing them. Can’t think of any names right now though. Might be worth looking into.

Live in Germany where these are all the rage. I was sceptical at first.

Over here you have the basic version which is the glass roof and the corner posts and it’s otherwise complete open.

The pro version is the glass sides which open, most commonly sliding panels.
Either way you should consider a shade for underneath the glass as it will get hot under there.

Don’t know why they’re not more popular already in a country that has such rainy summers. Fire up the BBQ under the roof, happy days!

Nice to be able to close it to the wind and sideways rain but not an absolute necessity, I would say. Maybe have it built with the rails installed so you can add the sides later.

A 10x10ft area with the basic setup would probably cost 10-12k EUR here. With sides probably 20k.

Friends had something like this and ended up replacing the glass roof with a solid roof. Glass roof gets manky quickly and makes managing temperature in the room

Also its the least used room in their house.

Bigger issue is the fire pit. Jaysus looks like something you’d get in a lego set with chairs sold separately lol. Get something bigger

Glass room is such a fancy new name. Conservatory just screams your ancient gran. Brilliant marketing.

    11. Don’t do it. You are basically putting a greenhouse onto your house. It will bake in the Summer and Freeze in the winter. We had one (they were called conservatories back in the old days) and while it looked lovely it was uncomfortable most of the time. We eventually replaced it with a proper extension which is lovely and bright and comfortable.

    12. Devore_dude on

Looked at it, cost insane and it adds zero value to your house for the large investment, so we’re looking at doing a real extension with proper roof etc

2 boys I used to work with install them. Check out their website SmartGarden.ie. They’re also on FB. They’re 2 genuinely lovely lads aswell.

I live in Europe and recently installed a more basic veranda

      Considerations:
      – glass roofs look nicer but can get very hot
      – PVC is much cheaper
      – you don’t need to add sides straightaway. it is possible to add later
      – plan where the rainwater will go. Maybe sort that before installing
      – glass roofs show up birdstains more than PVC

We got a simple one done in wood from these lads: [https://www.crazypergola.ie/glass-rooms](https://www.crazypergola.ie/glass-rooms)

We were initially going to get an aluminium one like pictured, but for the size of the area, looks and budget it was a no no, we were quoted upward if 15k for a 4×3 albeit with sliding doors…

    16. If I did this on my house (where there is little to no shade) it would be a fking nightmare in the summer temperatures. Our glass porch can easily hit over 35 in summer and we’re thinking of removing it for this reason. It just floods the house (we’re trying to keep cool) with heat.

    17. Cisco800Series on

a big no on a glass roof. you wont be able to sit in it in the summer.

My parents put in a conservatory when I was a kid. It was boiling hot in the summer and baltic in the winter. Anything plastic left in there melted. I don’t see the benefit of them. Just an excuse to buy more furniture.
