“Europe’s systemic dependency on Big Tech’s social-media platforms threatens the continent’s digital sovereignty. While policymakers often argue that there are no viable alternatives, this ignores the potential for building apps on open-source frameworks like the AT Protocol, the foundation for Bluesky.”

Until they argue what the initially set default language should be, require everyone to get full retina scan to prove ID to protect the children. Then fine itself for some borderline impossible to meet requirement for backdoor access to all the data after getting hacked.

We don’t need more proprietary platforms and algorithms. There are already lots of decentralized and open-source social media alternatives that anyone can host on a server. People just need to start using it more rather than using the Big Tech platforms.

Imho on this front the greatest obstacle would be adoption rather than tech, given the massive sunk cost fallacy, first player advantage of existing platforms, combined with the amount of content already available there.
Technology is available, although ours won’t be cutting edge I imagine, it does not need to be at the beginning at least.

Just because we can, doesn’t mean we should. Social media is corrosive to society, and you can’t make it not corrosive without also making people not want to use it. Our resources would be better spent on educating people on media literacy, how to spot fake news, how to not fall victim to algorithms, and how to have a healthy relationship with technology.

Of course it can and there isn’t anything stopping this. But you need more than technology. You need users!
Even companies like Facebook with a huge user base and massive marketing budget have never managed to make Threads a proper competitor to X. And that’s with Elon doing his best to destroy it.

If “*Europe can build its own social media*”, then why didn’t it build the world’s dominant social media over the last 30 years?
There are serious structural problems. “Open source” isn’t a magic wand. For the last thirty years, enthusiasts have been pretending that linux is about to dethrone corporate-built, for-profit OSs like Windows. More recently, enthusiasts have promoted a series of different open social networks, all with disappointing results. Remember when everybody loudly said they were leaving Twitter for Bluesky? Do you remember [Post](https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/19/24135011/twitter-alternative-post-news-shutdown)?
These arguments are naïve at best, dishonest at worst, by ignoring the network effects, and how networks are built.

Norway has its own (and relatively new) app called Hudd, which is like Facebook without all the crap. You have to log in with bank id’ so there’s no fake profiles. Second, there are no algorithms, no advertisement, and the developers communicate with their users when it comes to issues and what to do/not to do etc (its still being developed) Its perfectly able to replace Facebook for all matters.
A European social media that requires you to provide an ID just to use is DOA.

Europe has nothing for mass use. Windows / Mac OS made in USA, Linux – no use for average user due to fragmentation and complexity. We don’t have our architecture, chips, and technology.. Even streaming services belongs to Americans. Canal + is exception, but who’s paying for this?

How is there an entire article talking about European social media alternatives and it doesn’t even mention Mastodon once?! The article even mentions Bluesky, but not Mastodon which is actually developed in Germany.
> And Eurosky is a new pro bono effort by a group of European technologists, including myself
Oh right, this is actually just a fluff piece promoting the author’s own project.
> We are building Eurosky on the AT Protocol, the state-of-the-art, open-source technology developed by the Bluesky team.
Right, that’s why the author doesn’t mention Mastodon, they’re building a competitor on AT Protocol instead of using ActivityPub (Mastodon’s protocol). And looking on https://github.com/EuroSkyTech they’ve basically not even started.

We need end-to-end encrypted private messages in any serious social network. If you want larger groups, then this means roughly [MLS](https://messaginglayersecurity.rocks/).
At present, only [Wire](https://wire.com/en/app-download) deploys MLS, although [Element](https://element.io/) (Matrix) managed close-ish, and already handles many rooms better than others for numerous rooms. Wire and Element are both alraedy European and open source. They should be funded to expand in necessary directions, and then mandated for communications involving government agencies. Also Europol should’ve their budget nerfed for pushing backdoors in encrpytion.
ActivityPub and AT Protocol only look suitable for public conversations, not private ones. Yes Europe should push them both, including by funding more European developers who build upon them. You can read some comparisons here:
