I don’t think I even know anybody who was ever in that car park. Was it ever used?

Sounds like the problem was that they didn’t have a specific plan as to what was going to replace the ramps.

This feels kinda perverse. If they’re worthy of protection (they’re not imo) add them to the Protected Structures list. If not this is madness.

Feels like Fingal / ABP and the airport have a pretty unhealthy relationship at this point.

With the best will in the world it is impossible to understand the logic of this decision.

I can understand, even if I sometimes would disagree, with decisions based on visual amenity in places where people live. I can’t imagine who gives a shit about what the airport looks like in that level of detail. I go there to get on a plane and pay too much money for a sandwich.

It sounds like the airport is going to end being a museum in a few years. If you try to preserve everything then nothing will be preserved.

I’d say if the airport offered to build an orphanage for beaten children, Fingal would reject it at this stage.

Something as essential as airport should be able to override any stupid objections like that

The ramps represent modernism and ambition and should be celebrated as a symbol of Dublin Airport. They are much more interesting than many of the other buildings around them, especially Terminal 1 itself and they are distinctive enough to let you know that you have arrived at Dublin Airport.

They take up a relatively small area and should be preserved in the same way as the first terminal has been, both show where Ireland was in different eras. They are definitely much better than another identikit airport building with yet more shops and underwhelming food outlets, some things have value and not just a price.

all else considered, what a disaster of a headline. the ambiguity of that passive voice can read two completely opposite ways – was the manager the one who refused permission or who had permission refused?

though yeah i know the ambiguity is probably the point to get you to click in and get ad revenue

in fairness, Dublin airport are already in breach of at least one planning condition that was granted. why would Fingal agree to anything else at this juncture?

    11. Council planners on a power trip as usual. Their egos need to be taken down a peg.

    12. God I hate Brutalist design and would love love for it be knocked down. It’s just cheap and nasty architectural design that a child with duplo can do a better job of.

If the ramps mysteriously collapsed Id be delighted as this is a stupid decision, its a airport, stuff needs to be removed and upgraded to keep it functional, blocking stuff like this shows how little they understand of how a airport works.

Anyone else been up to the car parks and the portakabin offices that the DAA have there? Why ask for permission and convert the place to offices when you can keep people working in a huge fire hazard when there is architectural merit in the original setup?

Genuine question, has the splitting of Dublin Co council into 4 entities worked?

The city is so spread out now would it not be better to have one council for some joined up thinking?

Those ramps rock, their iconic to this 40-something.

People objecting to these have names. They should be used

Lads, those envelopes are gettin a little light. Gettin cheap in your old age

Wood Quay couldnt get preservation order but concrete parking ramps can.

I once reversed down those spiral ramps in a van. Sweaty seat after that I can tell ya.

    20. What an absolute joke. Great example of why we’ll never solve our country’s problems. We have incredibly stupid people making incredibly stupid decisions like this in our public institutions.

    21. 21stCenturyVole on

Technically everyone criticizing this decision here is a NIMBY, as it’d leave nothing built in the parking ramps place.
