it was supposed to be upgraded years ago when Amgen pretended they would open a factory in the area. Between that and the Cobh road the place is a shocker

The quick and simple solution to improve things, at least on the section between the city and Midleton, would be to immediately close off all the small access roads. It’s a dual carriageway with a speed limit of 100 (120 in parts even), you shouldn’t have boreens joining it at right angles. If there is already alternative access, close them off.
It’s been proposed in the past to more or less build an additional carriageway then turn one of the existing sides of the dual carriageway into a frontage road. It would probably be cheaper (albeit horrendously unpopular) to just CPO every house that couldn’t be easily provided with alternative access to a road. But then expanding the road would also require CPOing a bunch of properties.

Oh okay, it’s not ***current existing*** homes at risk.
>The situation has become so bad that the substandard state of the road could potentially stall the proposed creation of 5,000 new homes in the area.
>Up to 5,000 new houses proposed for the area could be put in jeopardy due to the absence of sustainable travel and development plans.

The road to Waterford is never a priority in Cork!
Seriously though, it’s a very shoddy dual carriageway crumbling away under ever greater use which sums up so much of our infrastructure.
Killeagh/Castlemartyr desperately need a bypass as well

The newer 120km/h section is very to near motorway spec but the old Midleton DC has gap junctions and house entrances directly onto the road. The gap junctions are lethal.
It needs to be retrofitted with a several flyovers.
Part of the newer section also seems to be quite wavy, like it’s subsided.
