Remember, make sure you’re wearing a GoPro at all times, because the police won’t do much unless you have video evidence, a copy of the perpetrator’s passport, and a signed confession. Not sure why we have the police anymore. Useless force, useless justice system.
It’s not all bad news; non-crime hate incidents reports have gone up 500%, and arrests for hurtful words on the internet have risen by 300%. Finally, the time police spend pissing around at flag events instead of solving crime up 175%.
Are murders down because less people are trying to commit murder, or is trauma care just better?
Brace yourselves if anyone believes this is getting better.
The best way to improve will more budget cuts.
That will teach them, and make lots of money for the papers as they report on their new faults being found. Then they can be cut more.
Looking at [the wider data for England and Wales](https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/bulletins/crimeinenglandandwales/yearendingmarch2025) these stats are pretty great. Crime is generally down across the board (and see Figure 1 for how spectacularly it has dropped in 30 years) – aside from fraud. Violent crime is fairly flat over the last few years, but down over 10 years and 20 years, as is theft, as is criminal damage. Sexual offences have fluctuated quite a bit over the last 20 years, but we’re pretty much stuck in the middle.
Homicides are about half what they were 20 years ago, knife crime has cone up over 15 years, but that’s police-recorded knife crime, so comes with the usual disclaimers.
Robbery is interesting – in the last year there was a 50% increase in robbery of business property, but a 10% decrease in robbery of personal property. Overall robbery is still down 13% from 2020. Figure 6 is a fun one as well, showing that thefts have dropped to about a third of what they were 30 years ago (the peak) and have been decreasing fairly steadily since. And that’s despite population increase. Criminal damage down 55% over 10 years, 82% over 30…
Fraud is the main issue, across England and Wales, but that may be down to an increase in phone scams and whatnots.
But yeah – these numbers are pretty great. Of course the headline has to “both sides” it to create a story, but we should be happy about this.
