According to the [New Union Treaty](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Union_Treaty), those would be the borders of the USSR (renamed “Union of Soviet *Sovereign* Republics”) upon reorganization.
If Gorbachev’s reforms succeeded, Putin never would have gotten to power.

That’s the ultimate plan, that’s what Russian imperialism and revanchism is all about, to “restore” what is “rightfully theirs”.
It would not be stable internally those people wanted out.
Putin was Boris Yeltsin’s successor, not Gorbachev’s. If the union had survived it would’ve been taken over by someone like Nursultan Nazarbayev.
It was destined to fail anyway, wasn’t a long term project but for sure It traumatised the whole world.
Putins goal is to reinstate the borders of the Russian Empire with the added Countries of the Warsow Pact. So he would go to war against the Baltics, Poland, East-Germany, Alaska and so on.
It wouldn’t have by enough. We’d be fighting in Poland or Finland now.
We are witnessing Trump running the most powerful country in the world, why would this surprise us?
Ruzzia is not just a country, its a frankenstein federation. There are many little countries inside. And if not for the corruption and fear, those little countries would have left the federation long time ago.
It has so much internal dissent that only a crazy dictator can keep it together.
Putin could have been eliminated long ago, but the west doest want Ruzzia to implode. Imagine all that nuclear arsenal scattered around and controled by different warlords. Nobody can predict what would happen.
If Yeltsin hadn’t happened maybe Russia would be a genuine partner to work with. But the oligarchs wanted their corruption, and not just the Russian ones
With the Aral Sea back from the dead, he could pull it off.

Putin wouldn’t be in power if the USSR didn’t crumble.
Not something to be thankful for.
Maybe if Gorbachev’s reforms worked, Russia could be a half-decent partner.
