Translation: «In a letter to EEA countries, the EU announces that it will impose tariffs on Norwegian steel. The measure will initially apply for 200 days.
The EU is introducing protective tariffs on Norwegian ferroalloys, which are used in steel, among other things. The tariffs will be floating based on a set minimum price in the EU.
In the letter to the EEA countries, the EU writes that they are introducing the tariffs because imports have caused “serious damage” to industry in the EU.
– EU producers are suffering great damage due to a decrease in production, sales, market shares and employment. They are suffering large losses, they write in the letter.
The measure will initially apply for 200 days.
Unrest in the global economy
In April, US President Donald Trump announced that he would introduce high tariffs against a number of countries. The announcement led to unrest on the stock markets and in the global economy.
In recent months, several countries have been in negotiations with the US to reach an agreement that will lower the tariff rate.
On Thursday, reports emerged that a trade deal between the EU and the US was within reach. According to diplomats, an American proposal with a 15 percent tariff was on the table.»

>The tariffs will be floating based on a set minimum price in the EU.
So basically the EU wants Norway to sell steel at a min price, which is much higher than the domestic price in Norway and the tariff will basically fill in for the price difference. [EU tariffs on Chinese Steel ](https://www.eumonitor.nl/9353000/1/j9vvik7m1c3gyxp/vjsir92hdaw4?ctx=vgaxlcr0e00y&tab=1&start_tab0=40)is 10-12%, so this will probably be lower than that assuming Norwegian steel is more expensive than Chinese steel in terms of production cost and thereby sales price…

The “serious damage” to the steel industry in Europe was caused by China, when some people realised that it was cheaper to import steel and steel products from China than produce them at home.
Just compare the steel production and how many steel factories there were thirty years ago and how many of them are still left nowadays.

I’m confused as to how Norwegian steel is cheaper than EU steel..? Nothing is cheap here, especially not labour.

Would Norwegian steel be green, produced with power generated from water? If so, that would be really a disappointing move by the EU.

Time to tariff electricity, oil and gas exports to EU with the equivalent tariff %. This is honestly such a shit show from the EU, and killed the join EU-momentum with one decision.

Can we in southern Norway please set som export tax on our power then or just stop exporting for some time so we don’t have to pay the 5x higher prices than the rest of our country?🫠

Then why are we even in the EEA? The amount of bullshit non trade related legislative rules imposed upon us for the supposed tariff free market seems very one sided
