Austria joined EU alongside Finland and Sweden back in 1995 after the Soviet collapse.
So, possibly 30 years later there will be a close accession to NATO for the 3 countries after the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Neutrality doesn’t exist, it just means you support aggressors.
Austrian here. As far as I know, this didn’t even make it to mainstream media and there is no real talk about this in politics.
As this would be considered highly controversial here, don’t hold your breath.
Do it, neutrality is a farce.
But we should have our own, european military alliance… maybe one day.

NATO is dead. The only thing the US would do if a NATO member got attacked is blackmail the Rest of Europe. Or invade Greenland. Build a european defense alliance. Fuck the US.

Hopefully not. Why any country in Europe should want to stay in Trumps pact is a mistery to me, it’s even more unimaginable that a country would willingly join it and set it’s course to ww3.
In terms of self interest, likely a pretty terrible decision to join now. Forces Austria to increase defence spending significantly. I was surprised to find that the referendum in Slovenia was cancelled, because the US are really ramping up pressure to increase European spending.
Personally I don’t want a nation that has consistently bowed down to the Russian government, in a cross party corruption scandals (it seems both left and right wing parties are very close to Russia) to join NATO, and I even think there is an argument for further pressure from the EU. I don’t want yet another especially Orban but to a lesser extent Erdogan in NATO.
What about the KGB nest in Vienna? We all know that the streets of Vienna are crawling with Russians and KGB agents.
