“The European Union’s tariff deal with US President Donald Trump highlights the bloc’s inability to present a united front. By capitulating to Trump’s bullying, the EU has cemented its dependence on the United States and will become a prosperous yet powerless appendage of the American empire.”

Someone explain to me why this is a win for trump? China got like… 51%? And thats not a win for Trump?

But 15% for EU is a big win for trump? Someone make sense of this for me please. Honest ask.

Will 15% tarrif really make Americans not buy EU products?

Or will they just have to pay 15% more?

    3. Reflector123 on

Just the fact UK got a better deal with a smaller market is a massive blunder. Why would France or Germany look to continue an economic union if this is the outcome.

    4. Vegetable_Elephant85 on

Politics aside, the EU depends on the United States far more than the US depends on the EU. This is a simple fact that Trump capitalized on. Concerns about European independence seem odd, given that the EU does not have military and relies heavily on the U.S. for security. In that context, the current dynamic makes sense.

I mean Trump say he got a lot of things but the EU commission say that they just agreed on 15% tarrif and the rest are just trump lying but there are not a lot of source so idk who to believe

We should focus on what has been agreed and what has not been agreed

Assigning adjectives like surrender, capitulation etc is just trying to demean Europe. Not sure how this helps the European citizens.

Can we please follow what EU team shared as the agreement versus what US team keeps talking about?

Only 15% tariff is agreed on 75% of goods. Everything else is not agreed (with details) and it’s just being spun around by various teams to suit their narrative.

Is it a good deal for EU, no. But who was expecting a good deal with USA ?

it is not the first time US leverage its advantages on European states. sometimes (but not always) Europe adapts(like appearance of euro, for instance).
i am really curious what will happen this time.

Such a troll move: makes EU to come to Brexit Britain to sign a deal *with the EU*. Why could this not happen in Brussels or some EU country? Pro-Brexit/anti-EU Trump never misses a chance to humiliate the EU.

Here’s another take. After trump leaves office and let’s say a democratic administration takes over… What will happen to this trade deal?

    10. Ok_Woodpecker17897 on

The only real agreement is a 15% tax on the American consumer.

    11. AR_Harlock on

We buy American stuff with 0% price increase… Americans buy our stuff (which they do anyway) at 15% increased prices… I see this as a consumer win for us…

And no, for example, no American is gonna go buy “American fashion brands” like they do with Italian for example, or French, same thing with high end cars…

    12. Suitable_Ad_6455 on

Europeans don’t have to pay any tariffs while Americans have to pay a 15% tariff. Isn’t this a win for Europeans?

    13. sant2060 on

This “deal” is a dissaster for EU.

Its not about economy per se, its about EU being created NOT to accept deals like this.

EU has 0 point after this.

Just check UK deal. Guys left EU and got a better deal.

Whats the fcking point of EU then? You give decission makers 450 million people, biggest USA export market … And their answer is striking a “deal” worse than UK alone?

What, Starmer is one in genetation genious?

Or some EU idiot fcked up beyond compare?

    14. Sybbian- on

The EU consumer should continue with the “Buy European” trend. Tesla is a nice example what can happen to a company if consumers decide not to buy any of your products.

Can we all just stop pretending the yanks are our allies anymore?

Sure, theyre fairweather friends on occation at this point.

      But “allies”?… No. Not anymore.

We Danes joined and died in their wars. Spied on the rest of you in secret for them. Let ourselves give up control of all things planes, military, and half our foregn policy.

… And yall saw how much thanks that earned us.

      Dont do like we did.

    16. The EU must put tarrifs on US digital services, this is the only real pressure it has. Building an independent european tech industry is a good thing anyway, that can only be done through protectionism.

    17. No_Gift6346 on

EU is probably blackmailed over withdrawal ongoing “support” Ukraine by US if not accepting their terms.

    18. pablo8itall on

Settling on tariffs is a Pyrrhic victory as it will increase prices in the US – I think that came into the EU calculation. Trump can try pressure companies to take the hit and move the operations but we’ll see how much success he has, and in the medium term these costs will be pass on I think.

The rest of the stuff just seems vague and nebulous like most stuff from Trump and there’s no guarantee that wont all change in a few months again, he could just rip up the agreement.

Its probably wise to string it out. There no easy win here with man child, he’s petty so even if you stared him down he’ll be back with more pain in the ass pettiness.

    19. whooo_me on

This one really has me confused.

On the one hand, the EU’s leaders again look like spineless wimps who’d be pushed over by a breeze, and I hate seeing that orange rapey paedo getting anything he asks for.

On the negative side – tariffs will hurt the U.S. consumer when they buy Euro goods, and reciprocal tariffs would end up hurting the Euro consumer a lot.

I haven’t read the details, but I’d love to know when the various pieces are due to happen. I’d love it if it were all so vague that it might not ever happen, dependant on the details, and future elections!

    20. Yiplzuse on

The EU got the better deal. They have no tariffs on imports, so their consumers will still be spending dollar for dollar. The U.S. consumer will pay 15 cents on the dollar in tax. This will likely halt a small percentage of purchases. The EU will also have an edge on China with lower tax.

    21. EndOfTheLine00 on

Ok, why are we getting a bunch of articles from weird sources about this day after day after day? I don’t see this covered this much in the mainstream press. Not saying that this is bad but there definitely seems to be a huge anti-EU bot campaign at work here signal boosting the best win Russia and Trump had in a while, likely in the hopes of pumping up EU sentiment (I lost track of the number of commenters going “this is what made me give up on the EU” and similar things)
