      Good idea but we can’t get or retain guards as it is.

      Good to see. If we want investment in public transport, especially in the cities, we need the infrastructure to support it and that includes policing. Plenty of countries have transit police, our neighbours included. It’d be a waste to have gardai who are trained in a variety of different types of policing and different types of crime to be on units focused only on transit. Makes a lot more sense to have a force trained and dedicated specifically for it like the Airport and Harbour Police Forces do for their own area of operation.

      They could start by arresting the offenders on the LUAS, charge them and seize their bank accounts as profits of crime and use it to fund the new transport police. A campaign to forewarn. I’m on the LUAS red line and it would be a little gold mine. Openly dealing and cash on show. Seize it off the cunts

      Why not just train actual gardaí, like they do with roads policing? It seems like a good starting gig for fresh guards.

      Either that, or have most of the staff in it be Garda Reserves, if they actually fucking paid them instead of some pittance of a stipend.

      Either that, or we need another force more akin to a gendarmerie in other countries which focus specifically on public order and maintaining the peace and crisis response while the guards focus on criminal investigations. Because the guards clearly do not want to do that kind of beat work anyway.

      Just another waste of money and plaster over the actual issues – a lack of prison spaces and guards.

      Sadly, if I’m reading this right – the Gov is going down the cheap route again.

      If this is anything like the airport police the gardaí will be shouldered with all of the paperwork and responsibility for prosecution. These guys will basically be security guards who can arrest and will have to wait for AGS to come and do the follow up. This will only stretch out garda resources further as it’s not the arrest that takes up most of a guard’s time – it’s the investigation, prosecution and admin associated with it.

      What’s needed is a transport police that can arrest, detain and prosecute individuals without the need for AGS so that gardaí can focus on their own role.

      The same needs to be applicable to aiport and harbour police but the state doesn’t want to fork out the costs associated with that.

      Are we supposed to be impressed by that? Why takes so long? Also they can’t get guards to join the force…why would they join transport police?
