Im surprised there is no comment from the Garda unions in the article.

Id be interested to see what angke they try and use to defend this behaviour.

All of our attention is on the behaviour of politicians, meanwhile the massive inefficiencies and insubordination in some of our public bodies goes almost entirely unnoticed. Our media would do well to expose it.

My god. If that was most of us in our jobs we’d be out on our ear and signing on.

    4. I think the problem might be that in a lot of areas outside of the cities Gardai are tasked with being a jack of all trades and probably see more “juicy” things to be doing than pulling cars over on a rainy Monday morning. Maybe the establishment of dedicated regional flying squads, solely for traffic enforcement, that could travel from district to district and set up checkpoints without notice might be better. Also, every checkpoint I’ve run into seems to have two cars and five or six guards on duty which seems like over kill.

Down the road from me is Salthill Garda station just off the Prom here in Galway and next to the station is a coffee shop on a corner of a junction.

Without fail every morning and lunchtime, there are 5-6 cars parked on the corner of the junction on double yellow lines – right next to the Garda station. And nothing is ever done.

      Absolutely farcical.

The road Garda are the only ones that actually seem to be good at their job! (Unfortunately)

I’m surprised that it’s the traffic corps that are getting heat here! It’s the only formidable division in the Garda bar a handful of lads in swat teams or whatever?!

I’d fancy my chances getting away with actual murder in Ireland, but I wouldn’t think doing 50 in a 30 zone would be worth the risk.

Gardai not dong their jobs is a bit all to common these days, just look at the Tina Satchwell and Michael Gaine enquiries. Unbelievable incompetence in both,

    8. EchoOfSingularity on

You can literally ask anyone in Ireland what do they think Garda is doing on the roads and the answer is usually “fuck all”. Hardly a reason to be “shocked” unless you’re seriously out of touch.

    9. I believe it.
Pre covid, there was one place near my house in particular where Gardai would always be checking for tax/insurance.
I haven’t seen them there for years.

Doing performance management well is difficult. It’s a full time job for managers and the visible element of it is just the tip of the iceberg. Doing it well needs the right culture and support organisation wide and consumes a lot of time.

I’ve been fortunate to have seen it done well once in my life. A lot of organisations and companies go through the motions but that’s it. They expend the effort but don’t get the benefit. 😢

    11. Necessary_Physics375 on

All they are good at is doing cars so if they aren’t doing that. What the fuck are they doing???

    12. Definitely not shocking to anyone who’s been campaigning for road safety. As an organisation, Gardaí simply do not care about road safety.

The entire roads policing unit needs reform. Minor tweaks won’t fix this.

    13. And who believes this is limited only to road policing? Not me I can tell you.

What strange timing this report comes out just after one of our gardai gets attacked and stabbed from behind while on duty.  Almost seems like the regime doesn’t want us to have too much sympathy.

Drive 120km round trip every day for work. Haven’t seen a speed trap on the road in well over two years. Everybody knows where the speed vans are going to be. Haven’t come across a check point in about a year.

I’ve been at lights with Gardai behind me in the car and you’ll see cars making turns going through reds well after they’ve changed and the Gardai just ignore it. They can’t be arsed doing any of the small jobs which is a requirement of their job

I lived in Dun Laoghaire years ago and the square my flat was on had a one-way rule in the mornings and evenings because it was used as a shortcut to avoid a set of lights. Like clockwork, coming up to the end of the month, there’d be a garda car parked on the street, not visible to anyone turning in. They’d sit there until they’d passively collected their ticket quota for the month and then feck off. That was nearly 15 years ago, so I’m not remotely surprised Pikachu about them still being averse to work.

More pearl clutching by government over something everyone else already knew.

The traffic division is a joke. I travel a lot on the roads and I think I will see one traffic car every few months.

    19. fionnuisce on

Road policing units on the road round the clock stopping people with non conforming vehicles. Pulling over shit drivers. We need a no mercy approach to really change peoples’ attitudes.

Irish police grossly exaggerated the number breath tests it carried out on motorists, an internal report has found.

The report found that 3,498,400 tests were recorded on the police computer system dating back to 2009, but only 2,040,179 were carried out.

Across the country as a whole almost 1.5m fake tests were recorded, and in County Tipperary nearly four times more breath tests recorded than actually carried out.

A second report published this week looked into revelations that 146,000 people were taken to court and 14,700 people wrongly convicted of motoring offences because of issues with the fixed-charge notices.”

      No, this is wrong…

The ones driving with lights on driving 150kmph are certainly rushing to an emergency. Turning the emergency lights off past the traffic jam is only cause the emergency has passed.

To be fair, I don’t even think the issue is around speeding or drunk driving like some other Eu countries, especially in Dublin. The worst is people running red lights, cutting queues, going on the right lane for the length of their trip, turning without looking or indicating, general parking etiquette is atrocious, driving with no insurance or tax, some cars and old vans with 3y plus expired discs, then bikes and scooter drivers just being a general hazard that can come out of any corner at full speed, parking on top of cycle lanes, drivers using bus lanes to queue, etc etc
And the obvious issue of you can’t really park your Motobike in certain areas without if being nicked minutes with no one doing anything about it in broad daylight.

So maybe more patrolling and presence and get people some small license points for doing dangerous and dumb stuff. They either learn or lose their licenses. If they actually have one…

I’m surprised we actually have a roads section of the gardai.
