Dalla metà del 1860 fino al 1925, l’area conosciuta come Montgomery Street (colocolariamente nota come “Monto) era uno dei più grandi distretti leggeri R3D europei. L’area è una specie di affascinato mentre lega la storia squallida di Dublino. Il potenziamento dell’attività era una caserma dell’esercito britannico. L’area si è riversata in quello che ora è Foley St in James Joyce St.
Nel 1874 secondo il blog di cinque lampade, aveva oltre 70 bordelli e leggende che il re Edward perse la sua v*rginoty qui quando era il principe di Galles.
Le donne dei Nighy che lavoravano nella zona sarebbero andate a dormire con i soldati britannici, ma le avrebbero debitamente alleviate dalle loro armi durante la corsa fino a e in mezzo al sorgere del 1916. Si diceva anche che i tassi di S*Philis avessero contribuito a questo secondo un tour che ho fatto circa 10 anni fa 😂.
C’era una leggenda urbana che mentre Bram Stoker proveniva dalla zona ebbe un fascino per l’area che continuò a influenzare Dracula. La leggenda urbana mi è stato anche detto che il nome proveniva da Droch Fhola che si traduce in “Bad Blood”
Nel 1926 arrivarono i fondamentalisti cristiani (la Legione di Maria) guidata da Frank Duffy e chiuse il posto.
La canzone è stata immortalata dai Dublino. "Prendila su per il monto". Ora non chiedermi di analizzare la canzone ma fa riferimento al distretto di Red Light.
Era anche il luogo in cui mio nonno cresceva da bambino, mi ha fatto chiedermi cosa avrebbe potuto vedere !!

It was named “Mabbot Street” until 1911, then Corporation Street and now James Joyce Street.
“But it was the Legion of Mary founded by Frank Duff in 1921 which had the greatest impact on shutting down prostitution in the Monto. Their actions included the persuading of women to leave brothels and take up paid employment elsewhere. The new State’s police force could no longer turn a blind eye and in the Spring of 1925, a large raid resulted in significant numbers of arrests. While this did not shut it down completely, activity petered out over the following years. Street clearances and renamings means that there are no physical marks on the landscape recording this district’s history”
Like Clontarf isn’t that far away, but it would be a little bit of a stretch to say Bram Stoker was from the area surrounding Montgomery Street. Merino Crescent is a couple of kilometres away like
The Monto didn’t “spill into” Foley Street, Foley Street is the current name for the street previously named Montgomery street.
That’s not Foley street is it?
