I remember short wave radio & side bands having extreme range abilities at relatively low power. Pulsed data might be a way of escaping interference and reaching greater distances than fibre optic spools? Avoids reliance on starlink and heavy spools, it might be one of the avenues being explored.

So it sounds like they are using a repeater drone to reach a drone that is high up, just visible over the horizon from the repeater, then setting a target for it to hit autonomously.

I wonder if instead of one repeater they could use a mesh network. Like 50 drones in the air, each of which can relay the signal to any other node, perhaps over multiple frequencies. Its even possible to transmit data at high speed with IR LEDs and sensors at shorter ranges. Get a dense enough cloud of drones covering the no mans land and it would be hard to jam.
