From the Spanish port of Palos, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sets sail in command of three ships—the *Santa Maria,* the *Pinta* and the *Nina*—on a journey to find a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia.
Italian explorer? I am pretty sure he was a subject of spanish crown and Italy did not exist.
Maybe the world would be a better place if he didn’t?
Columbus thought he could reach the indies by sailing west and was told that the earth was bigger than he thought and the distance was about four times greater than his calculations. He persisted anyways and eventually got funding for an expedition from Spain.
So his main qualities seem to have been stubbornness and dumb luck.
What a legend
