It’s really hard to commit when your country turns into a corporate level management mess.

    2. Who is there to blame? Sorry, but politicians are so disconnected from reality that I’m not surprised. They live in completely different world and none of the issues that applies to regular citizens are even closely relatable to them. Why would citizens volunteer to die because of their poor decisions?

    3. Notcooldude5 on

That’s why conscription exists. Most countries are the same.

    4. Practical-Pea-1205 on

While I’m not a supporter of my government I would fight if the alternative is Russian occupation.

    5. Obviously because half of the Germans are kids, elder people or women. The 16% who said they absolutely would defend the country militarly are still enough to fight back Orcs.

Young people, who lived their entire life in one onegoing economic crisis, who generate more GDP than any generation before them, while getting paid less and having to pay way more for their living expenses, all the while getting told by boomers that they shouldn’t eat so much avocado toast and respect their elders and get more babies, because boomer pensions don’t pay themselves, who now also face the prospect of state sanctioned surveillance of their private conversations, just saw their leadership bow to political bullies, and see everything around them being sacrificed to boost corporate profits…

…don’t want to die to uphold a system which has failed them in every way imaginable.

      What a complete surprise.

    7. ParticularFix2104 on

“Over half wouldn’t” implies that something like 40% (35 million) would.

But that’s certainly not an encouraging figure, Germany needs to build more houses.

When I last visited germany It didnt even feel like germany. Berlin was full of immigrants and asian tourists.

    10. GetmyCakeForLater on

Obviously. With the people running it destroying it everyday there’s nothing left to fight for, other than starting an uprising. Who is surprised in the slightest? No one with a brain at least.

I’ll go to war. I don’t mind sharing my shell scrape with Keir Starmer. He’ll be there…right?!

    12. trini696 on

Its Not so much “Not wanting to fight for germany”… i feel ( i dont know but i would strongly assume ) like, if we would be attacked directly i, and a lot of young germans would fight.

But to fight in a broarder european or even greater conflict… yeah thats just Not a good trade of for what i got growing up in germany, especially as a young east german man… even now, when i can say im well off, i still feel like tax cattle for expenses i dont care about or stand behind…

My patriotism died a few years ago, maybe if there would be better circumstances for me and my gf to found a familiy and have children i would See this another way… but in this Situation we were maneuver in as young germans… yeah… no thanks…

    13. That is what happens when younger generations cannot afford a home. Having no assets to defend, it becomes easier to relocate. Enjoy the price of speculative real state purchases.

Surprise for all the EU politicians: People are only willing to fight for a **nation**, not for an “economic zone”.

We need to embrace European nationalism and pan-nationalism. Not to reject it.

I wonder what the percentage was in the 30’s hmmm

    16. solvedproblem on

Easy to say if it’s a hypothetical. Only once it’s necessary will anyone really know.

    17. mage_irl on

The question we should ask what threat it takes for people to want to fight for their country, not whether they would do it at all. I will not fight for my countries interest in some faraway country, but if there is a genuine threat to peace inside the country? I probably will

There’s an anti-war song that basically goes like “I proudly enlisted and then went to the homeless and junkies to tell them how I’ll protect our paradise” and I think that captures it well.

If you’re economically disenfranchised, and had the last 3 elections politicians promising you that your vote is saving the democracy, while said democracy never helped anyone in your social circle and the only thing that happens is seeing your taxes increases while the ultra-rich getting more and more benefits, you’re not interested to risk your life over this.

Like the current administration increased subsidies for EVs so that you get them even for cars that cost 100.000€ and more. Nothing against EVs, but you can’t blame someone who has to decide between rent, heating and food for the last two years when he feels betrayed and stops listening to us.

    19. Zypharium on

I would say it depends on the circumstances. If EVERYONE has to, and I mean *everyone*, then I would definitely defend my country, but if it is only the rank and file that are expected to die, then no. I mean, look at Russia and Ukraine, the children of high-ranking and rich politicians are excluded from the conscription. I am not dying for rich people that are saving their asses while exploiting the people.

In 2022 Germany was preparing to fold to russia and throw eastern NATO flank under the bus. While that didn’t pan out , they are still acting as fifth column formenting tensions with illegal migration, undermining Schengen, whishful environmentalism and folding to USA instead.

    21. OnIySmellz on

I am curious to know what proportion of that 60% consists of people with dual citizenship.

    22. FantasticClue8887 on

You should fear the other half then. I’m not proud to be German, as I didn’t do anything to be that besides winning birth lottery, but I definitely would defend my country and my fellow citizens with everything I can and have.

In the last “Spiegel”, probably referring to the same survey, there was a statement and analysis that before Russia started their war against Ukraine, the will to defend with weapons was at 30% of Ukrainians. When war started (btw: fck Putin!) it jumped to 80%+

Which means that people have a different view once directly affected

    23. The median age is 45. So take germans under 15 and over 55 and you have “over half of germans”

    24. The-Owl-Likes-It on

Nice framing. Pls keep in mind that nearly all of European Countrys “woudnt fight for there country” based on recent polls.

Noteable exceptions would be poland and finnland.

    25. DisasterNo1740 on

It’s not exactly news imo that most people wouldn’t become voluntary contract soldiers during war.

    26. Grnd_Control on

I would never fight in any war. I really dont care whether person stealing my taxes sits in Berlin, London, Moscow, Washington or Beijing and would never endanger my life for disputes of politicians that would at the end of the war shaking each others hands and smiling together for a nice photo in magazines. Until Im 100% sure that politician (and all his adult kids) that was stupid enough to drew my country into offensive or defensive war fought and fell in the toughests frontline, until then everybody that pushes the war agenda is my primary enemy.

    27. ThePhenome on

Funny how people are talking about not fighting for their government, system, boss, etc…

Alright, so you’ll instead live in a authoritarian regime, which cares even less about you and your problems, which would execute a cultural reeducation programme, remove any possibility of self-determination and which could press you into service at gunpoint, without a care in the world.

I’m not a physically healthy person, but I would probably sign on to help in some capacity in the event of an invasion, not because I’d want to fight for my government, but because I’d want to protect my home, my culture, and my right to make my own success or mistakes. This mindset might come from being from the Baltics, and this struggIe is in my blood, but I won’t believe for a second that it’s not a worthy cause.

    28. Brave_Scientist on

I will go in the only place that it is not corrupted by captilism : SPPPACE.

    29. I never understood these polls.

You don’t get a choice here. Your opinion does not matter.

And besides, public opinion would swing wildly in case of attack.

      So this is just clickbait.
