"Hanno pagato essenzialmente nessuna tariffa. E ho detto: “Abbiamo essenzialmente un deficit di $ 41 miliardi con te, signora” – non la conoscevo – “e tu vuoi pagare le tariffe dell’1%”. Voleva l’1%. E ho detto: ‘Non pagherai le tariffe dell’1%.
Cosa è successo anche durante questa cosiddetta negoziazione? In che modo il lato svizzero è stato catturato da qualcosa del genere? Non ti imbatti solo in un’intervista di Trump utilizzata come piattaforma per trascinarti in diretta in TV. È imbarazzante. Non ricordava nemmeno chi fosse KKS.
Questo sembra davvero un fallimento totale sul lato svizzero. O non si sono preparati correttamente o hanno pensato di poterlo parlare in silenzio
Potrebbe davvero scuotere le cose in Bern? Il 39% e forse peggio avrà un grande impatto sui lavoratori con licenziamenti. Dovrebbe almeno assumersi la responsabilità e se lui scende peggio, offrire le sue dimissioni. Guadagnerà ancora 250k in pensione ahah

This is in no way the fault of the Swiss negotiators. Trump just uses Switzerland as a tool to make internal politics. And of course a senile old man doesn’t remember the Swiss Bundespräsidentin.

Your first mistake is believing anything Trump says.
You can’t ‘properly’ prepare to talk with an insane person. I think we can hardly blame our governement for trying.
I refuse to blame Keller-Sutter for this. She was trying to explain the gold bullion thing to Trump, and whether due to mental incapability, or moral unwillingness, he was not hearing any of it.
Fuck them and cancel the F-35. The Rafale or Gripen are valid alternatives and european. Seriously, get over them.
Trump cannot open his mouth without telling a lie. 1% tarif? You actually believe KKS tried that after negotiations settled around 10% ?
It’s just Trump being Trump. Regardless of what KKS has done in the past, this is just us having to deal with the orange clown. It’s not a UBS situation.
After the disaster, this is the death knell for federal council KKS. Time for her to step down.

Yeah I’m not happy with KKS, but this is hardly her fault. Trump just wants to mess with us.
I don’t think you need to believe Trump‘s account of conversation.
As far as we heard , CH was expecting 10% tariffs on goods that matter with some exclusions like Gold and Pharma. Pharma doesn’t have any tariffs anywhere because they will be part of section 232 investigations. And who applies tariffs on GOLD?
And how US calculates numbers is also very different. – As per US, trade deficit is 40 billion. But as per CH, it’s not because US is excluding services and including Gold.
– as per US, they want CH to pay them 40 Billion USD for the deficit. Who asks for money for buying goods from a supplier? Is this like a mafia system that you sell goods to mafia and also pay them to let you sell the goods?
Most likely Swiss government said that the trade deficit is 1% and Trump simply distorted the comments because he can
Let’s remember in this game, there is one party who will always say the truth and always live up to their end of commitments. Only one party will use right numbers and refrain from absurd comments.

So he for sure want to destroy Swiss export of pharma to US, which is main reason for this story he invented. Everything else is smoke and mirrors. There are no negotiations, India thought they had one and just learned there are more demands. Similar for Canada. Even if we accept 39% as normal he will push to 250%, as said loud and clear.
So I wouldn’t be so quick to blame our side and would start thinking Trump hasn’t been the most consistent negotiator, to put it nicely.
This situation is easily resolved with a raclette and CocaCola (the guy doesn’t drink alcohol)
It’s all about pharma and he doesn’t really care about anything else. Everything else is just political pressure to force pharma before his pharma tariffs are applied. So he doesn’t really care how he treated KKS. As matter of fact, making her look bad is ideal because she will in turn (he probably hopes) force Pharma to look at prices of drugs sold to US.

I don‘t think she did a great job in the negotiations, but Trump is lying again, no surprise there. In the discussions with his team they were close to a 10% tariff agreement. The trade deficit is fueled by Gold exports from Switzerland to the US that are the direct consequence of Trump’s idiotic tariffs and weakening of the dollar. The Donald is also ignoring the services deficit that Switzerland has with the US. The strong Swiss pharmaceutical companies are a problem as he wants to force Pharma companies to lower their high prices in the US that are partially caused by the broken US health system. Another US allegation is the Swiss ‘currency manipulation‘ meaning to artificially weaken the Swiss Franc vs. the US Dollar. Everybody can check how the CHF/US Dollar course has changed over the last time…..
One clear mistake she made was bragging to the media how she was successful in negotiating with Trump and that she somehow found access to him. That‘s enough for him to freak out and throw all negotiations over board. At the end he is a malignant narcissist who lies, threatens and cheats all day long. Let‘s see what the Swiss visit to the US will achieve. He clearly has no problems to increase tariffs to 100 or 200% if Switzerland retaliates and Switzerland can‘t do much, they are not China. So there is not much Switzerland can do other than sucking up to this felon, learn from this and lower dependency from the US over time.

However, how can a rational, rather buenzli, Swiss politician face a deranged idiot that thinks that having a trade deficit means “losing” some kind of game? Two quotes come to mind (not verbatim because I don’t want to look them up):
“I have a huge trade deficit with my barber, he never buys shit from me!” and
“Never play chess with a pigeon, no matter how good you are, it will knock the pieces over, shit on the table an walk around like it won”
