Honestly, bikes are a menance nowadays.

Obviously what he did was well out of order, but at some point over the last however many years, it seems cyclists have determined that they are *the* priority in all situations, should always be allowed to progress at pace, and everyone else is simply responsible for moving.

She approaches them way too fast, I’m pretty sure she skidded to stop, then pretty much rides at/through them.

That said, we don’t need nutters like the idiot who pushed her either, and I hope they get caught and done for the assault.

Everybody just needs to slow the fuck down and learn to coexist and these shared spaces

    2. No-Potential-7242 on

He wouldn’t have done it to a man. Also, it’s a straight path (it’s not like he couldn’t see her coming or she couldn’t see him and stop in time) and he seems to think he has the right to take up all of it. There’s no attempt whatsoever to move over and share the space.

That said, I have not cycled in the UK since returning a few years ago. Everyone–cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians–is clueless about basic etiquette and safety. It’s truly shocking that people behave so aggressively towards other groups of road users. Pedestrians are included in that. There’s so often zero respect for cycle paths, with people wandering around oblivious.

I suspect this situation is yet another consequence of austerity. What needs to happen is:
      – A major public education campaign to change behaviour on shared paths like the one in the video, – Construction of decent separate bike paths where possible (not like where I live where thickos on the council have more clout than engineers and the paths blend in with surrounding pavement so they look “nice”),
      – A requirement for cyclists to have insurance,
      – And a blitz on louts, where cops lie in wait to mete out consequences. Word would soon get around and behaviour would change if there were consequences.

I cycle along a canal path to get to work and slow right down when encountering people, always say thanks when passing, always ring a bell when approaching from behind. Some of the absolute pricks I encounter riding too infuriate me too, path bullies that have almost put me in the canal too by flying past or taking up the whole path coming towards me.

Big, powerful dog off-lead on a public footpath. Tells you everything you need to know about the owner.

    5. [deleted] on

I hope he shouted THIS IS SPARTA

I’m kidding. I walk my dogs along a canal every day and I have them on leads and move us out of the way for cyclists or runners etc. Sometimes I don’t hear them coming, so I like it when they ring the bell on their bike to tell me.

    6. Vegetable_Grass3141 on

What a piece of shit. He’s taking up the whole path, looking for a fight. She slows down, but he’s already made up his mind what he’s going to do.

Wouldn’t be suprised if he beats that dog.

    7. Sally_Traffic on

Not sure why bikes are allowed on towpaths which are usually narrow, and ironically horses aren’t and they were the original “tow” part of “towpath”.

    8. Writing_Salt on

If the only way for a cyclist to safely pass on such a narrow path is when pedestrians have to fully step away from the path, then cyclist have to re-evaluate the meaning of ”shared path”. It is wrong to push someone, may it be cyclist off bike, may it be pedestrian off path.

    9. MoleDunker-343 on

Bit of courtesy goes a long way, I’m not saying pushing her in the canal was on, but it’s a pedestrian path.

When I’m walking my GSD I tuck up right against the bushes with him on a short lead, expect someone on a bike to slow down, but they rarely do.

So a lone female cyclist comes to a complete stop in front of a man blocking the whole path to tell her to slow down despite being able to come to a complete stop, then is pushed in after she continues on her way once he starts being abusive. And somehow the person who’s life was risked (yes canals aren’t deep. She could have been knocked unconscious, and/or broken a limb, and/or got tangled underwater; people have drowned in far shallower water) is in the wrong, because you once met a completely different cyclist who broke some rule either real or imagined.

      Peak r/UK.

    11. HawkAsAWeapon on

The man clearly saw the cyclist from some way out and made no attempt to go single file.

The woman was able to stop in a controlled manner relatively close to the man, showing that she wasn’t going dangerously fast.

This guy is just a vicious knob looking for an excuse to be confrontational.

Anyone on this thread defending this guy have been reading too much of the Daily Mail or local news outlet facebook comments. It’s indoctrinated selective hate against cyclists.

    12. SlavaVsu2 on

I think the dog should put a leash on it’s owner, he looks dangerous

    13. Both-Mud-4362 on

I used to love dogs. My family have owned dogs. I have friends with dogs. And yet of late I have found myself increasingly hating dog owners.

I used to like going for a morning walk every day. And I used to walk everywhere I could rather than use the local bus. But unfortunately in the last 5 years I have been bitten, chased and attacked by the dog owner just for existing and them not having proper control of training for their dogs.

The last straw that now has led to me having a permanent fear of walking and fear of dogs. In 1 week I was accused 3 times by 3 different dogs.

Dog 1 came running at me unleashed and immediately barking like crazy. The dog owner was nowhere in sight but I could hear them calling for the dog. But clearly the dog had no recall and was wild. The dog was a big collie.

Dog 2 was a small Pomeranian that came running out of its escaped back garden at me. It latched itself onto my ankle biting and tearing my joggers and ruining my trainer. I had no choice but to kick the dog hard. And the owner was aggressive and assaulted me.

Dog 3 was a big German Shepard. Luckily it wasn’t aggressive or angry. But it was unleashed and would not stop sniffing me until the owner told it to knock it off and called it over. But at this point I was already scared from the first 2 incidents and having a very big dog not leave me alone made me have a full blown panic attack.

I have cats so I do think all 3 dogs could smell them on me. Which may have partially accounted for their interest in me.

But now I’m traumatized. And I know so many other people who feel the same. Many friends from the local rambling club have stopped for similar reasons.

We need more laws around dog ownership and more police follow up/enforcement of it.

    14. What is it about cyclists that brings out the worst in some knuckle dragging cave dwellers? The cyclist was not in the wrong at all. It takes mutual respect to use any public areas, and the cyclist in this instance slowed down, but the angry dog owner decided that wasn’t enough and was looking for a fight.

I cycle and see it each time now, including cars not giving way to oncoming traffic on bridges or traffic calming areas (which includes cyclists), and then get shirty for making them stop. Had a grumpy old man and his wife taking up an entire 2 metre wide path next to a canal and physically tried to stop me to tell me there is a speed limit (I was at a crawling speed).

It’s like a severe mental illness in the perpetually angry, where cycling triggers them. It must be exhausting to be so angry, and to take it out on cyclists.

Watched it, dog owner just does what I see dog owners do around here, and block everything up instead of moving out of the way. But then I have had people do the same, where them side by side and not giving room because their conversion is more important than people walking, so doesn’t surprise me

    16. Neither_Mud_3212 on

Not sure if I watched a different video?

      * “He is taking up the whole path” – It is a single lane path, so yeah??
      * The cyclist didn’t really appear to show any intention of slowing down until he initially waves his hands (just before he says “slow down”).
      * Even if you trust your brakes, why slow down at the last moment? Why not just show some courtesy and slow down in advance.
      * Proceeds to cycle through/into him after the initial kerfuffle. Just comes across as arrogant.

The other guy had his dog off the leash & pushed the person into the canal, I don’t agree with that, before you assume I am defending his actions.
If a cyclist tries to cycle through me like she did after being confronted and being so close to me, then my walking stick would somehow find a way through their spokes. Spatial awareness clearly needs to be taught via trial and error.

Holy cow, some of those comments are horrible. I know what the Daily Mail and its readership are like but there’s such outright nationalism it’s is an embarrassment.

A man attacked a woman. Anyone defending this should be put on a register and have regular check-ins with police and therapists.

Cyclist vs dog owner…. Hard to know who is more intitled…

    21. spank_monkey_83 on

Cyclists are fit, feel persecuted at times, generally ampted up on adrenaline. Dont ever pick on a cyclist.
