They already broke their NI pledge, may aswell do it again

    2. Danqazmlp0 on

Of course he declines. It’s stupid to make any definite promises at this point.

Would be interesting to get a look at the full itemised expense list of where Government money is going.

I imagine right now a lot is going to over inflated private contracts for services that should have been operated by the government. Many sectors now are having tax payer funds funnelled away into private for profit ventures via these contracts.

I would support a small rate increase if the thresholds got moved and the tax traps were cleaned up. Removing the tax traps with personal allowance phase out and child benefit charge might end up increasing revenue over the long term as people don’t contrive ways of avoiding those rates via salary sacrifice and similar. I also think the VAT threshold should be reduced to a much lower level with a soft phase-in. This would align better with other European countries, and would stop businesses constraining their revenue to 90k artificially.

    5. Call an election then. All he’s done is lie like the party before him. If he can’t do what he promised, step aside and let someone else do it as he’s clearly not competent to lead a turd down the toilet, let alone a country.

Peoples want Increase welfare state, but don’t raise taxes.

Reddit told me there’s an endless supply of someone else’s money thay will fix all of our problems. But they don’t include many figures

We pay 110bn a year on interest for our debt. The state needs to be leaner and/or taxes need to go up.

      Another u turn?

      Tell me it’s not so.

At this stage they may as well do a budget with reeves crossing her fingers behind her back.

    8. Alive-Turnip-3145 on

I think there is still tiny bit blood to squeeze out the middle classes – my prediction is it will be a raid on pension contributions, either applying ENICNIs and/or capping the tax relief at 20%. There will also be slew of other tweaks like VAT on private healthcare and some sort of tax on gambling.

The exciting part is; that’s it – after they steal our pensions and remove all VAT exemptions. There literally won’t be a single penny left for them to tax that won’t result in lower HMRC revenues.

Then we can FINALLY start reducing spending. PPP per capita in the UK is ranked 28th on the world, below the EU average. Most of the UK outside of London is poorer than Eastern Europe countries yet the general population feels entitled to world class public services and a massive welfare state.

    9. jtrimm98 on

It was a stupid pledge to make, the government can’t fund basic public services so needs more money. Just introduce a wealth tax already!

    10. Reeves has a Budget last November and ramps up Tax and NI to negate the £20 billion Black Hole. Fast forward to August and her economic brilliance has left us with a £40 billion Black Hole. Am I right to question her competence as Chancellor?

    11. AdviceHefty4561 on

I, for one, am fuming that my taxes go on public services. I’m voting Reform not because I think my taxes will go down, but I feel more assurance that the tax will go to much needed investment in the private sector rather than going to people too stupid to not be born with disabilities, and too graft shy to be able to work three full time jobs to survive.

    12. arabidopsis on

They need to radically announce land value tax or we’re just gonna kick the can down the road.

Reform getting in will result in a even worse situation

    13. CessnaBandit on

That headline… while I’m not a fan of Starmer I’m not a fan of that headline too. He didn’t decline to rule out any tax raises, that’s really putting a twist on what was said.

The media are rats no matter which side you’re on.

    14. fffffffjtrdc on

Time to start declaring less. Zero interest in the government wasting more of my money

    15. XenorVernix on

What on earth is this government doing?

They had a budget last year with huge tax rises to plug a 22 billion black hole and now they suddenly have a 40 billion black hole?

      Like what the hell?

Government black hole doing exactly what black holes do. Suck in everything around them and keep growing until there’s nothing left to take. Except here it’s our salaries circling the black hole.

    16. Greedy-Tutor3824 on

Can someone explain to me how their disability cuts that were going to save 5bn over 5 years were supposed to fix a 40bn hole? This government aren’t honest.

    17. Available-Ask331 on

Bring the Tories back. It was only a 22bil black hole with them.

    18. Legendofvader on

Their not cutting benefits or dealing with the cost of irregular migration. Yep tax hikes are coming

    19. LordLucian on

Do these taxes include private businesses and the rich?
      I can only hope.

    20. ThatGuyMaulicious on

      So basically they’ve created a £40 billion black hole…

    21. Remarkable_Misty on

Sickening from labour yet again! Time to call a GE now

    22. Quick-Taste4204 on

The first things they should be doing is increasing taxes on super rich and big businesses. But this won’t happen because those people have too much influence and can’t be upset, plus it would probably affect a lot of the cabinet MPs!

    23. ChibaCityStatic on

I thought they had to fill a 20B deficit ? They’ve doubled it? Haha what’s going on here?

    24. sheffieldpud on

Sick of this country now tbh. Earning more than I have and feel worse off for it. Why are we, the working people, always the ones that have to pay. Get these entitled pensioners off the triple lock, sort benefits out and be stricter with getting people back to work. Stop pushing all this shit onto us!

    25. Would be good if Government’s forfeit their right to remain in power for a minimum of four years if they break their pledges.

Breaking a pledge should reduce their term to 2 years.

    26. Trailblazer913 on

This is the whole problem with the West, when all real economic activity was decided to be offshored, and people were overeducated on irrelevant topics en-masse, and given millions of BS jobs or just welfare to keep the ship going, the financial dominance always had a hard time limit that was going to run out. You need a balanced domestic economy between production and finance, otherwise rent seeking will overwhelm it.

    27. parallax3900 on

Raise capital gains tax to parity with PAYE. Remove triple lock.

    28. Nine-Eyes- on

Tax the rich – media creates a shitstorm, loses votes

Reduce pensions/triple lock – media creates shit storm, loses votes

Increase taxes – media creates a shit storm, loses votes

Cut services spending – media creates a shitstorm, loses votes

And on top of this, wages have stagnated for decades and the country is still absent multiple billions of pounds a year as a result of leaving the European Union.

We need to have an honest conversation about how we fund this country, because at some point someone will be upset at having to pay more. Regardless of what any incumbent party says, any party in government will have to face the same choices, regardless of whether it’s Labour, Reform or Lib Dem.

    29. Loonytrix on

It’d make a nice change for Kemi to slap him with a “£40 bn black hole” question. I’m fed up of the weekly “£22bn black hole” replies for the past year.

    30. BeenzieWeenzie on

This party has no backbone or ambition and the poorer/middle class are going to be fucked over because of it in October.
