MILAN (AP) — Italy cleared the way Wednesday to build the world’s largest suspension bridge linking the Italian mainland with Sicily in a massive 13.5 billion euro ($15.5 billion) infrastructure project that has been long delayed by debates over its scale, earthquake threats, environmental impact and the spectre of mafia interference.

The Strait of Messina Bridge will be “the biggest infrastructure project in the West,” Transport Minister Matteo Salvini told a news conference in Rome, after an interministerial committee with oversight of strategic public investments approved the project.

Haven’t they been trying to do this for the last 30 years or something?

Finally just hope to see the works start before the next year, is not going to be easy as preparation works, houses demolition, geological checkings and WWII bombs bonification usually take a bit.

The only positive note is that funding is not going to be a problem as it was fully assigned one year ago

Can’t wait for the guy who spent 200 billions in windows to explain why spending 5 billions for a bridge to connect the biggest island in the Mediterrean to mainland Europe is a waste of money

The Mafia won’t allow this to happen.

They like keeping Sicily and the South of Italy poor.

Plus it will probably kill Villa San Giovanni.

I was under the impression it was unfeasible due to high tectonic/volcanic activity in the region. Interesting to see how they managed to overcome that!

This bridge will never be built in our lifetime. It’s 60 years we say we will do it, we never do.

If we really make it…it’s gonna be a huge accomplishment for Italy and the EU.

While there is good cause to be skeptical… this is gonna be cool as hell if they pull it off.

This appeals very much to my inner 5 year old.

      Needs more dinosaurs.

Please give the entire project to a Japanese firm or someone with earthquake experience and honesty, like the Greeks handed the entire Athens Airport to the Germans. Otherwise the Mafiose will start making the money disappear.

I’m confused. the distance between Sicily and mainland Italy is only about 2 miles, whereas the Mackinac bridge connecting Upper Michigan to Lower Michigan is 5 miles. why would this proposed one be “the longest”?

      Good for them

Few years ago I visited Sicily and was told that the bridge was not possibile because mafia controlled the ferries.

I’m going to be very surprised if this actually done in less than 2-3 decades. I very much hope I’m wrong.
