The Dáil heard accusations from a number of TDs last month that supermarkets are price gouging.

But the CCPC said in a just-released report: “Overall, there is no evidence indicating that competition is not working in the Irish grocery retail sector.”

It’s so easy to blame that part of the chain we directly interact with. It’s a very complicated system with several pressure points each subject to increased input costs.

Supermarkets are fairly competitive and the margins are razor thin. I do think that loyalty programs need to be looked at, possibly even scrapped altogether. Tesco charging way higher prices on some items for people who don’t have their clubcard is definitely price gouging IMO, even if it is only a small matter of downloading the app or asking the person behind you to borrow theirs.

“its just greed” makes no sense to me. They were greedy 20 years ago, they were greedy 10 years ago, they didn’t just wake up one day and say, oh yea, I can just increase the prices and be greedy.

“bu-bu-but record profits”, record profits are a guarantee in an inflationary system because the same profit margin as a percentage will continue to post larger and larger absolute value profits.

Plenty of customers to go round no need to compete on prices its a happy cartel.

Expect prices to rise again if the Politicians push ahead with more Carbon taxes.

I want to see where in the supply chain they have increased the price.

Do farmers get more since they can’t exactly charge what they want?

If you are looking at the price of beef and milk, the price of cattle that the farmer is getting in the factories is very high right now. There have been lots of news stories about the number of farmers leaving the sector and the number of cattle in the country falling. This trend is not isolated to Ireland. It is one of the reasons why our CO2 emissions are falling.

Harvest of grain, grapes and fruits in Europe were down in recent years, changing weather patterns due to climate change and some economic factors are to blame. Less food and the same level of demand.

This is just one part of equation and I can’t speak to all parts of the reasons for the increase in food prices.

The main advice is to shop around. Some great value to be had out there still.

    10. hmm..look the price of butter has increased by 70% from 2021 to this year. It can not be that hard to find out what the issue is. Less cows therefore less milk? Energy cost? Feed prices? Transport? Storage? Increased export prices? Price gouging? Climate change? All of the above? I’m not even mad anymore, I just need to know why….

    12. Jaffa cakes are twice as expensive in Lidl now compared to 2020.
The money I have available to buy Jaffa cakes has not doubled since 2020.

The reality as I see it is money is worth less now than it was before. And the government are doing everything they can to not let people aware of it as it’s a different form of taxation. Which requires an adjustment to the taxing of income and its thresholds.

I don’t know why people think there is price gouging. There’s too much competition. All the big grocery retailers would have to work together to raise all their prices and that’s very illegal. Margins are razor thin for almost everything they sell.

Meanwhile, the price of Kerrygold butter is about the same price in the U.S. as it is in Ireland right now. Maybe economies of scale is something to do with it?

Ive watched Tesco chicken breast pieces go from 150g to 120g all while they increase the price each time the package gets smaller so idk man I dont think you can really make sense of that.

I’m just back from France. Self catering holiday so we used a couple of local supermarkets. Apart from bread and pastries everything was more expensive than it is here. Meat in particular was lower quality and very expensive. Dairy, fruit, veg etc all higher prices than I pay for a weekly shop here.
