      > renowned academic, whose area of research relates to Victorian cemeteries

This tickled me. Still, it’s clearly an exceptional circumstance if she’s stuck in a psychiatric ward.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of illegals, enjoying 4* hotels, food, dentists, NHS treatment, money and working illegally. Pop her off to France, hop on a boat and enjoy your new life, hassle free.

Getting out of the UK will do his mental health the world of good.

    4. >She has lodged an appeal on **human rights grounds**, but if it is unsuccessful she is facing a ban from the UK.

Being allowed to continue your research in the UK is not a human right.

Lots of Brits would love to go and live in Canada, and apparently we think one for one swaps are ok, there’s a solution if Canada agree.

      >Dr Heather Scott has lived in Britain since she came in 2011 on a study visa.

Surely a study visa is a temporary thing, and she must have been expecting to return to Canada at some point?

No doubt she’ll get banned from the UK while some “asylum seeker” from Albania gets to stay because he only eats chicken nuggets and he might not get chicken nuggets over there.

Doesn’t sound like the kind of person we want or need to be fair.

People are full of excuses as to why they didn’t do the paperwork they needed to do. Being mentally ill is not an excuse. You can still fill in a form. Especially if it’s THAT important to you. They just expect the UK to be a soft touch, and so they dont bother. Then they’re shocked and butthurt when the home office says “no”

Well, Canada also doesn’t allow people who are sick to stay in the country, so I would say same same

*”In its refusal letter, the Home Office said that indefinite leave to remain was “a privilege, not an automatic entitlement”*

This is the central issue here that many of the pro-immigration lobby forget.

Economic migration policy should only ever, *ever*, serve to benefit the British public. It is not a humanitarian undertaking. We are not the world’s refuge, and if it is deemed that this individual does not benefit the UK enough to warrant her to stay her permanently, she should leave – like I would have to leave Canada if the same determination was made about me, regardless of any health issues.

Is there really that much new to learn about Victorian cemeteries?

    13. The Home Office are well known robots who usually despite having the power to have discretion rarely use that power.

Usually when the Guardian write these articles it’s in support of someone middle class who broke the rules and wants an exception because of who they are. Like the guy who couldn’t be arsed to wait for a lawyer and signed a Caution when he was rightfully challenged for walking down the street with a sickle and what looked like a dagger on his belt. Technically he was innocent but he chose to sign the Caution before his lawyer was available to advise him.

However in this case this woman is right. The poor woman was in hospital for thirteen weeks, I don’t care if she worked at Maccy D’s rather than a university, she shouldn’t be punished for being unable to submit her Visa due to circumstances out of her control. I mean imagine if she had been in a coma rather than a psychiatric hospital? We would not be having this conversation if that were the case.

She’s clearly not a threat to this country, she’s actively contributing to it, she hasn’t really broken any laws, so just because she couldn’t renew her visa shouldn’t mean she shouldn’t have a second chance

She just has to cross the Channel from France in a dinghy and she’ll be fine
