That’s a bridge too far.
Meloni wants to use the expense of building the bridge, to count towards the 5% of GDP for defence, that Trump wants NATO members to commit to.
She says that it helps ‘defend’ the southernmost border of NATO (because troops would be able to use it).
In an incredibly convoluted way, this is a response to Trumps’ ‘pluck it out of the air’ demand that each NATO country spends 5% of GDP on defense (preferably with American weapons manufacturers).
Political games are absolutely insane.
