It really isn’t a specific sandwich type like, say, a reuben or club sandwich or such — the other commenters are right, it might have a name in some autogrill (Apollo) or might just be a “panino con la cotoletta” (sandwich with breaded chicken). 🙂
*The “breaded chicken” was invented in Milano to keep the Austrian occupiers happy. They seemed to like that sort of thing. The Austrians took it back to Vienna and it became better known. “Weiner schnitzel”.

And let me tell you my friend…. You had one of the worst (as in quality). Mass production, not the freshest and using not the best quality ingredients. You can get 1 like that but 1000s times better in Italy

Well, “wonderful chicken sandwich” Is a risky definition ahahahahah
Btw its an “Apollo” from autogrill, the commercial version of what Italians mom prepare you for the lunch outside home (especially good on Sea days) Heres the recipe:
– loaf of bread, Better rosetta o ciabattina
– 1 chicken cotoletta, crispy as much as you can, maybe a Little burned
– 1-2 lettuce leaf
– 1-2 tomato slices (pick the ones that goes well in salads like “cuor di bue”
– generous amount of yogurt based mayonnaise
Drink a beer at side, go for the worst beer you can find at the supermarket like “Ichnusa classica” or peroni.

The fact that people love the food from highway restaurant chains we usually despise tells a lot on different expectations 🙂

I like it as well, but unfortunately it’s often made of reconstituted meat, something I try to avoid whenever possible.

“Panino con la cotoletta”, it’s a typical “pranzo al sacco” meal (lunch bag in English maybe?), I still have remembrance of when I went on hiking trips with the Church, this dry motherfucker was everything we would have to eat during a whole day of going up and down the Alps. At least in Austria and Hungary they put some sauce on their schnitzel sandwiches, ours was dry like the desert Jesus wandered in for 40 days.

Panino con la cotoletta, But it’s not the best place to eat it, certainly better than many other places, even if it costs twice as much

It’s a basic “filone” bread with a chicken cutlet in it, a light smear of mayo and a leaf of lettuce. You basically love the default bar/gas station sandwich here in Italy

Fun fact Italian immigrants brought this over to South America in the 1900s and now it’s one of the most popular meals in some SA countries, we call it “milanesa al pan” or “sandwich de milanesa”
