It’s been purchaed by Mike Ashley’s Fraser Group, so I expect they’ll be selling Slazenger PC cases in no time.

      > Ebuyer’s rivals include Scan UK and Overclockers, although it is Amazon that has really overtaken local businesses selling hardware online.

Glad Scan, Overclockers and CCL are still around. Would rather just buy something from Apple than take a chance getting PC parts from Amazon.

That said, I wonder if this is a bigger reflection on the move away from PCs for the people who aren’t in business or PC gaming. People are getting more comfortable with just having a phone and/or tablet + consoles for gaming.

ebuyer used to be great, I bought components for several PC builds from them. It also used to have a lively community forum.

But the last 5 years or so they’ve never been the cheapest and often didn’t have stock of what I wanted. I mostly use Scan now.

I don’t think Frasers Group (Mike Ashley / Sports Direct) will make it any better.

    4. XenorVernix on

Used to love eBuyer for PC components but this is going to put me off using them as Fraser Group charge a fortune for delivery on their websites.

    5. MrSpindles on

I wasn’t aware they were struggling, I’ve used them for as long as they’ve been around and they’ve always provided a decent service. Unfortunately as long as people keep turning to Amazon we’ll only see more British companies go to the grave (or to the vulture capitalist who will management consultant the remains until it fails).

    6. Didn’t BT buy Ebuer about a decade ago? Is Novatech still around. I haven’t used them for a few years.

    7. 9e5e22da on

Deserved. I’m only surprised they hung around for so long. There was a time when Ebuyer was responsible for more complaints than every other business in South Yorkshire. The BBC radio 4 consumer program had an entire episode dedicated to Ebuyer.

They notoriously removed their contact details from their site making it harder to complain. They were forced to put them back.

They were also terrible for refusing returns. Dead pixels on your new monitor, if it’s no more than 4, no return. That was one of their policies once.

    8. Furitaurus on

Pretty sad about this, I’ve used Ebuyer for PC components over the years, never had an issue with them.

    9. ProperPizza on

I’m a CCL guy now, personally. Had nothing but great experiences with them.

Folks, try not to buy your PC stuff off amazon. You’ll be glad you didn’t.

    10. ambiguousboner on

      Not surprising

Was upgrading my PC a few weeks ago and the price of a motherboard, cpu, and RAM on Ebuyer, Scan, etc was £200 more than on Amazon

    11. kahnindustries on

Fuck, I used them for years, never had any issues with them! Time to find another company to trust!

    12. nicholvengian on

      Bought by Mike Ashley.

Everlast GPUs and Kangol PSUs (tin foil certified).

      No returns or refunds

    13. FoxtrotThem on

A damn shame, I hope it finds a better life in the digital sky with Jungle; lighting one up for my boy eBuyer right now x

    14. BoopBeepBopp on

Used to be a class company about 15 years ago. No idea what happened to them. Went the same way as play.com. Anyone remember them? They were brilliant!

    15. ash_ninetyone on

Shame to see ebuyer go. I’m sceptical of Frasers to turn it around.

Tbh a large amount of my last upgrade came through Amazon. Not all, but a chunk of it because of next day delivery and their returns process has been easy. I hate it. But its resources make it too accessible and convenient in ways others can’t compete

I don’t recall the last thing I bought from ebuyer though. I can’t even check because their website has gone. Judging from emails, laptop memory in 2023 i think. What a massive drop off from them. Something in the last year?

I’ve used Overclockers and Scan.UK more recently than ebuyer.

    16. badgerandcheese on

Oh wow this is big – used ebuyer a lot in the past, and the odd purchase recently. Always in my price comp list.

    17. OmegaPoint6 on

I’ve not used them for ages mostly due to them using Yodel while Scan use DPD and Overclockers use either DPD or DHL. Shame as they used to be really good

    18. MadeOfEurope on

I was looking at laptops last week for my nephew and tried eBuyer and they had nothing….now I know why.

I have nostalgia for eBuyer from when I was a student in Sheffield, brought so many bits and pieces from them.

    19. QuietGoliath on

I’m honestly surprised it took this long. I’ve not gone near them in years after they tried ripping me off.

Yes, the same scandal that had pictures of their office with a scoreboard for “RMA’s Refused”…

    20. Fuck I haven’t long bought hard drives from them, hope they don’t die.

    21. Not surprising, they just haven’t kept up with consumer expectations. Last time I looked at getting some stuff they still offered about 4 different delivery options, with free delivery not arriving for over a week.

I can order from Amazon and have it next day, sometimes the same day now. Even CCL offers next day delivery for free over a certain spend threshold.

And before the usual ‘yes but if you order from Amazon you’ll get cat litter’ – I’ve ordered countless high value items from Amazon and never once had a problem. Obviously it does happen – but if ebuyer were shifting the same volume of sales as Amazon, then it would happen to them too.

    22. Izual_Rebirth on

Good. I know I’m probably in the minority but had nothing but issues with ebuyer over the years.

Especially their customer service. I ordered 2x 16gb sticks of ram not too long ago and only one turned up. Took them six months to sort it.

    23. shysaver on

Wow, that’s quite a shock! I remember buying bits for my first proper PC from them back in 2003. I bought some more stuff from them last year and my account from 2003 was still there and could see my original orders haha

    24. namboozle on

Ebuyer used to be my go-to place for PC builds about 10+ years ago but hasn’t been anywhere near what it was in recent years. Shame to see.

    25. snakeoildriller on

Shame! They used to be my go-to alternative to Amazon 😞

    26. Wriggerswag on

Can’t say im suprised, some horrible customer service. Bought a top of the line graphics card from them a few years back. It developed coil whine after 7 months, returned to them and they said it was unrepairable and because they didn’t have replacements on hand id have to accept 70% of the value of the initial purchase.

Vowed to never use them again.

    27. supercakefish on

I recently upgraded my PC with new GPU, CPU, motherboard, and RAM – Scan and Overclockers won out on pricing every single time for each individual component (in the end I got GPU from Scan and the rest from Overclockers). I remember Ebuyer and CCL both being more price competitive a few years ago when I was last looking, but something’s changed since then and they both seem overpriced now. I want to see healthy competition in this market, but you need to actually bother competing if I’m to use your business.

    28. Shame, they use to be one of the good alternatives to amazon and their dinked ass boxes and heatsinks.

    29. Kamay1770 on

Good. They used to be my go to but then the stories and pictures of RMA and warranty slap down competitions by eBuyer and prices that aren’t competitive meant I went to Scan or OC for almost all my build stuff. I’m a massive nerd and have spent tens of thousands in the last decade on kit.

    30. ilikeavocadotoast on

Bought my gaming laptop from there a few years ago and the price was wayy cheaper compared to Amazon and Currys, RIP

    31. Extra-Fig-7425 on

Ah what a shame, the first computer i built, i brought almost all the components from them.

    32. LantusSolostar on

Absolutely glad about this and I hope that the directors get their arses handed to them.

Had a corporate account with 50k annual spend and growing and they killed the account because I charged back a printer at £100 they didn’t deliver, after asking 6 times for proof of delivery.

Hope frasers just gut it to be honest.

    33. Ceejayncl on

Bought by Sports direct, so all deliveries are now going to cost £9.99.
Want to do click and collect or pick up from a locker? £15.99.

    34. voxo_boxo on

Always liked eBuyer, although I’ve tended to go for scan for PC parts these days. Shame to see this.

    35. I used to love Ebuyer. Their selection had really dropped though the last time I got components.

    36. I recently purchased an asus graphics card, I have the card but I’m wondering what happens now with the warranty should I need it.

From what I can see on Google Asus usually refers to the retailers to fulfil the warranty as required.

It’s registered on the Asus website but I logged in to the ebuyer account on what seems a new site and no sign of the order.

      Bit confused.

    37. Flimsy_Ad_5117 on

I did wonder. I used to use ebuyer all the time. After spending a few years not using them I recently looked at buying a stick of ram on their website. Almost everything I was looking for was out of stock

    38. TheShakyHandsMan on

Good. Absolute scam artists flogging used products as new.

    39. Wow, my recent purchase experience makes more sense now.

Having been an extensive customer from the early days, I’ve been going elsewhere for years now with my dwindling tech purchases – finally to decide I’d return recently for a big NAS hard drive purchase.

They arrived in an oversized box without any additional packing, so were bouncing around hitting each other with minimal movement of the outer box – who knows what they would have experienced from the delivery carrier.

Unsurprisingly I had DOA’s and had to go through RMA to get them replaced immediately, while still being unhappy with the working ones I now consider at risk of early failure.

I was totally shocked, as this wasn’t what I remember from earlier years and vowed not shop there again.

This man just loves buying shit doesn’t he. Absolute vulture.
