This an essential service for the growing stresses that come with maintaining a successful work/life balance. It’s a lifeline for those who truly need it.

Unfortunately however, it is an open secret in my job, that a high number of individuals abuse it to extend their annual leave or when they don’t feel like working. Just get a slip and out the door for a couple of weeks. Leaving the rest of us to pick up the slack. Not sure how it can be tackled.

I worked in several different companies in Ireland where people ended up on long-term mental health leave (i.e. sick leave due to stress).

9 times out of 10, it was down to poor management.
Karen doesn’t want to check reports and Michael doesn’t want to answer the phones, so both tasks get given to Lisa.
Then Karen decides she doesn’t want to schedule meetings and Michael doesn’t like prepping documents, so those jobs get dumped on Lisa’s desk too.

Lisa is beginning to feel overwhelmed so she raises it to management.
Management go talk to Karen and Michael who throw tantrums and get aggressive.
Not knowing how to deal with hostile people effectively, management goes back to Lisa and tells her that the others can’t take on any responsibilities and she will simply have to get on with it.

Soon, Lisa is doing everything in the office while Karen and Michael do nothing.
Lisa keeps raising it to management and they keep doing nothing to help.
The pressure becomes too much and Lisa ends up on mental health leave.

I have both been Lisa and seen this happen multiple times to other Lisas.

I’ve been using annual leave for mine, I know it’s stupid

      >Research has shown that 24 per cent of employees in Ireland took leave for their mental health last year.

Is that specificly just sick leave.

Companies don’t care about mental health. They will tell you they do and it’s important and provide resources but from what I can see that’s just to cover their asses.

They usually say ohhh mental health while handing someone another heap of work with no extra pay then sit there saying ohhh I don’t know what happened.

To be fair though, a lot of people need to start learning to say the word no at work as well.

Happens a lot in multinational companies where you are metric checked against others. Revenue and profits up every year but head count to do the job reduces.
CEO gets the stock price up, gets the big bonus , senior managers taken care of too with big bonuses. All the average staff suffer so the meaningless metric is reached and bonuses for the top jobs.
Meanwhile conditions in the company deteriorate cause they won’t spend on the staff to boost morale.

A meal out once a quarter is now a free cake in the staff canteen . A nice gift during product launch is now a thank you email.

Increased stress, thankless job, made to feel the company will go under in the morning if your not there to do your part . Paid for extra hours , no no no. Your salaried .

Some union activity in these places would do the world of good.

Not surprised at all. Sometimes people just need a fucking break from things and often times work doesn’t help your mental state at all. Often heard it said that people should leave their personal problems at the door when it comes to work but that’s bullshit to me. You can’t just switch off how you feel because you’re in work.

Actually think people would benefit from taking mental health leave. You’re just a number in these places.

Shit management. This is the issue across the entire working sector

Yup, I had to do this last year. Was out like 3 weeks but was getting to stage if I didn’t do it, I’d have been out a lot more.

Always find I’m more susceptible to stress but handle it ok most of the time but was getting to a point where I had multiple days of physical symptoms due to stress so had to call it.

Why is it separate from sick leave I wonder? Why didn’t we just increase sick days and allow them to cover mental health leave?

    12. sureyouknowurself on

Ok not good people are suffering with their mental health but it is good to see people taking sick leave for it and attending to their mental health.

    13. justformedellin on

Headline is a bit alarmist. It just means they took annual leave to relieve stress.

    14. Leavser1 on

I’m surprised one in four people availed of sick leave? That seems very high?
