Remember when an actual normal house used to cost that?

    2. MooseKick4 on

Ehh congrats I suppose. Not sure why some people think living in a wooden shoebox on a poverty budget is aspirational

    3. doates1997 on

50 a week is not possible but he has the right idea rat race is a waste of time. Working full time to pay off someone elses morgage is depressing to even think about nvm do

    4. its_brew on

The idea is right, buy or build what you can afford. People get mortgage approval and go for the highest amount too often .

The follow up is ridiculous, €50 a week just isn’t sustainable for many.

the real story is the conditions which led to him needing to do this, what’s happening in ireland is disgraceful, when will our need to emigrate end? When will young people be able to enjoy their country, build their homes and families here easily? Without feeling the need to go to ‘better’ countries?

We have double the emigration rate of the UK and triple that of similarly sized countries like Austria, this is abnormal

And no details on house at all. Price of land, permissions, waste, well, esb connection and etc. all of that is over 30k.

New standard for the Department of Social Protection to consider when dealing with the long term unemployed. Here’s a house worth €30k and €50 a week. If you don’t like it get a job.

To save you a read of the article it’s a ‘tiny house’ he built.

These are basically self made mobile homes. It’s not a fix that would suit most people and it’s been an ‘alternative’ housing option floated by the media for some time now.

What they don’t really tell you is you need somewhere to park and live with these tiny houses, so yeah – land issue again for those not paying attention.

I’m looking at houseboats myself these days…

The article would really have benefited from attaching some pictures of the house in question.

It’s impressive unable to build a livable house for 30 K but bear in mind one of the most expensive components of any build is the land that it is built on. That was not mentioned in the article.

I don’t know how someone could live on 50 euro a week though. Fair enough he probably doesn’t have any electricity bills but you still have to eat, do some socialising, buy clothing, transport et cetera.

I went for coffee with a friend yesterday, admittedly there are nice coffees and we got a pastry each. I paid for it (because I’m nice like that😎🤣) it came to over €20.

Man forced to live in caravan and he dresses it up as a win. Wait until winter hits buddy, you won’t be smiling then.

Mother and father probably had land to give him and probably covered the 30k to build the house too. I’m sick of seeing these people trying to paint themselves as a ‘started from nothing’ story when they 100% had a headstart on most of us. Fair play you’re in a better position but don’t talk down to other folk who actually have to start from step 1.

As someone who built his own house and knows what it took, I hate how these articles present a very tedious, extraordinarily expensive, complex and time consuming process as something that was easily achieved. Especially when they don’t mention any details around land ownership, services connections or planning permission.

WhY don’T YOu JuSST BUILD A TINY HOUSE??

    13. Upper_Armadillo1644 on

The answer to the housing crisis, we all just live in a tiny caravan in our parents driveway.

Waiting for the usual outcome from these stories.

1.) Mammy and Daddy paid for it or gifted the majority of the money for it.

2.) Gifted the land to make the thing on.

3.) Inherited the land to make it on or the money to pay for it.

Eddie Durkan didn’t make it to the States after all.

    16. JONFER--- on

I get you but even if you were to go to the cheapest supermarkets and buy exclusively their own branded stuff I don’t see how a normal person could live off of 50 euro.
If he can do it, more power to him.

    17. All you need is parents with enough land for you to build on and bobs your uncle.

    18. LookingGlass86 on

It’s in Cloughjordan. I look at the fucking thing every weekend. He’s never been living in it when I was there. He’s also charging up to €600 a pop for showing people how to use chop saws and hammers. Don’t know where the 50 a week is coming from. In conclusion he’s full of shit.

Full list of courses he runs. He may live off 50 a week but he’s coining it.

What rubbish…no mention of how he acquired land to built said tiny home on.
Did he have to buy a site. Wasn’t gifted to him in a will etc. ???

Even basic groceries cost more than this unless you are being frugal to the point of joylessness.

    21. drinksinshower on

Not something to aspire to. We all deserve better than this

    22. Really pushing the “live in a box” narrative here. I’m guessing he plans to have a shelf for a future spouse & a the kids can sleep in a drawer.
