And that is why when you walked into a Woolworths. The first counter was pick n mix. Low value items

Sounds like the thief guy off the fast show, “cos I’m a little bit wuhhhhhh, and little bit weyyyyyy!” 🤣

    3. GlazerNoobsGetPwned on

How about we… I don’t know… *enforce the law* rather than decriminalising theft by allowing people who steal repeatedly to get away unabated? Just a novel idea.

Make any attempt to return the country to a high trust and prosperous society? No, double down on your failings and introduce more and more regressive and authoritarian policies!

These scumbag shoplifters do not care where things are in stores because they know absolutely nothing is going to happen to them wherever in the store they steal from.

She clearly hasn’t seen any of the footage of scumbags raiding shelves without a care in the world.

In fact, putting expensive things at the back of stores will probably just put staff in even more danger with how these scum are now operating.

Now, this may well seem an outlandish suggestion to her but…. instead of shifting the blame to anyone she can, how about police turn up when called and actually deal with these pieces of shit threatening staff and stealing stuff.

Given that we’ve recently been told to delete emails to save water usage, I’m not surprised yet again there’s another scapegoating blame shift.

“Don’t wear short skirts or revealing clothes, because people might harass you”

      Wait…. No….. Not like that

    8. Everyone’s freaking about about this… why? Its not an insane thing to say. Shops already do this.

The only issue people should have is that its lazy for a Minster to state something shops already do, and adds nothing to fixing the problem. But the Minster said more than this, the Media as usual, have found one line to fixate on and make everyone angry.

We’ll be kissing goodbye to our modern idea of supermarkets soon, everything will need to be purchased through a window.

This sub is just full of people desperate to be triggered. Yes, she said that very clumsily – but try not to be triggered sheep and just beleive its *all she said*… “approach with the retailers, with the government and with the police to work together”.

Put the expensive items at the back of the shop and people will still half-inch them

    12. I-eat-jam on

I don’t think we’re a million miles away from returning to the old school counter service method in a lot of shops. So much is locked up now, anyway.

Shoplifting has always been an issue, when I worked in retail 20 years ago it was a daily problem.

Has it gotten worse because the police stopped giving a shit about giving anyone a slap on the wrist for it? Probably, but I haven’t seen the stats for it, just the usual media bleating because they need to cover up worse news elsewhere.

But the same applies to car theft and the other crimes they get you to report online or via 101 because they don’t really give a shit about it anymore.

It’s too simple to say all this is because there’s no fear of being caught or punished but it’s certainly a part of the issue.

One of the shops near me locked its booze cabinet and just opened it when people asked. Alcohol theft dropped to pretty much zero.

Don’t put criminals in jail, instead punish the law abiding citizens

    15. HiroPr0tag0nist on

It never used to be like this. Our society is degrading.

    16. Physical_Orchid3616 on

Ah, the British way of thinking. Rather than actually tackle the problem effectively, come up with a hare brained non solution that wont do anything, and put the burden on the shopkeeper rather than society, government or police. People wouldn’t steal as much if the economy was doing better, if people were better off. Shoplifting rates have skyrocketed not just because thieves feel enabled, but because they’re desperate. But let’s remember that not everyone will “nick” an item that’s at the front of a shop. We’re not all thieves ffs.

Retailers have been doing this forever, this isn’t some revolutionary new idea…

Makes no difference how far from the door stuff is if people are prepared to threaten extreme violence over a few bottles of booze.

    18. bigjig125 on

Time to legalise guns like in America, 1st amendment, right to protect self

    19. slartybartfast6 on

Seems a bit like victim blaming because theyre unable to fix the social issue due to police cut backs and stupid policies over the ladt 16 years…

    20. broketoliving on

there’s a law against that, maybe the police could enforce it.

    21. Big-View-1061 on

Teach people no to steal, instead of telling shops how to dress their storefronts. /s

    22. bobblebob100 on

Standard practice. Shoplifting has and always will be an issue. My Dad worked security at Asda 25 year ago and was an issue then. Shoplifting isnt a new concept (yes it may have got worse) but retailers protecting themselves by not putting expensive good at the entrance/exit has and always will be standard practice

    23. cornedbeef101 on

I know we can’t throw every shoplifter in jail, or cut off their hands or something, but the old fashioned public shaming of a village stocks could make an effective come back.

Put the scallywags on display and let people throw fruit at them. They’ll soon behave.

    24. ‘I would not advise people to tackle an individual who was stealing. I came across someone stealing in a store in Hull.

“I went straight to the assistant to tell them what was happening. I felt that was the best thing to do.’

Law and order is breaking down and this is the best we can do.

    25. mancunian101 on

It wasn’t long ago that people on Reddit were actively encouraging shoplifting and even praising it.

I wonder if those people feel a little silly now it turns out all the shoplifters weren’t desperate parents trying to feed their children, but actually scumbags who just like to go on the rob.
