This is the kind of journalism that would make me pay for an Indo subscription.

    2. The passport cards are useless, when travelling through Europe you can’t use them for fast passage through customs unlike the book which scans fine. Absolutely do not see the point.

Dublin Airport of all places, introduced E-gates after the passport card was introduced but they were not made to accept the card. Even our own country won’t accept them. I hate to be ‘typical Ireland’ moaner but this Father Ted stuff.

In Europe they’re useless as you have to queue up in the non e-gate lines to see an immigration officer which are generally the non EU lines which takes forever. Literally no point.

I use the passport card as ID in countries where I feel I might be expected to carry ID. I leave the passport in the accommodation.

Passport cards are about as useful as tits on a bull.

Late 2025? Sure it’s already nearly late 2025. News is becoming a pice of piss these days sure it writes itself.

They are a bit of a pain, I don’t know why they don’t work with scanners in hotels or banks abroad, in the end I have to show my passport to make things easier. At work, I have to input details manually, thankfully only about 1 in every 1000 people actually use them

    8. You can check in with passport details and use your passport card at the airport. I’ve been doing is for years. Even when I have to go to desk to drop a bag…nobody bats an eyelid

A lot of airports I’ve been to in the EU don’t accept it at the scanners for entry and exit anyway so I’ve ended up in the non eu queue for 45 minutes or an hour. Never use it anymore.

Flying from Switzerland to Netherlands the check in agent didn’t know what an Irish passport card was and asked for my passport instead… when I told her it is my passport and to read the top she showed her colleague excitedly and asked where my passport stamps are put… I was shocked she never saw one before.

Flying from Luxembourg to London the Ryanair staff at the gate almost didn’t let me on my flight. Told me no ID cards accepted, so I had to go through the story of “it’s not an ID card but a passport read it” and they had to get a manager and he said to them to let me on.

I was on a train in Switzerland going from one city to another (staying inside country) and they asked for ID as well as ticket which was a first for me for domestic trips. The guy didn’t accept my passport card as I don’t think he even knew what it was, but accepted my Latvian non citizen ID card that I have? Weirdest interaction ever.

Also very annoying the cards can’t be used at egates around the EU considering the government calls it a “passport” but the queues normally move quick anyways so can’t complain. On a separate note I got stuck at UK border for absolutely ages at manual counter. The officer just held the card, didn’t scan it or anything and asked what I was doing in UK and let me through but I assume that’s a standard question to ask anyways but a little odd to ask considering we can work & live there without permission.

Before Ryanair implemented passport card check in I had to call them every time and they just manually checked me in by treating the card like a standard passport booklet.

I didn’t know Ryanair allows people to fly to Albania, Bosnia, & Montenegro using the passport card considering the government says it’s not valid to travel to those countries. Be interesting to try use it around the non-EU balkans and see what happens.

First, it’s weird that Aer Lingus still not accepting it, ryanair does for so long time. Also yeah ID card doesn’t work on e-gates, so travelling with it to mainland kind of loses it purpose, as those e-gates are life saver.

I just use it to my flight to UK and for other destinations I keep my passport. Not ideal but at least not much question asked.
