Isn’t Croatia in NATO and adherent to article 5? Aren’t they in the EU and adherent to article 42.7?

Yet another shitty clickbait title. When will it ever end?

Guys read the full speech in the article. It’s short and less inflammatory than a clickbait title.

“the government is not authorised to commit Croatia to any new international coalitions outside existing obligations.”
Sounds quite reasonable.

> “Croatia is a member of the European Union and NATO and only has obligations arising from membership in these alliances,” Milanović wrote.
Well that’s just the thing, isn’t it? EU military obligations need to be significantly expanded.
The way it has been run so far is inadequate to ensure the defence of the Union.

Clickbait title and OP begging people to read past it. Classic!

Good thing that people in the comments have read the article and noticed these crucial parts:
““Croatia is a member of the European Union and NATO and **only has obligations arising from membership in these alliances**,” Milanović wrote.”
“The Government of the Republic of Croatia has not been authorised by anyone to push Croatia **into any new coalitions** that could include the participation of Croatian soldiers in the war in Ukraine.”

Its one thing when your cheering others on and a new reality when they’re cheering you on to go into the meat grinder. Ya’ll have no idea how fast you’ll drop Ukraine like a hot potato if member states soldiers start dying in it.

As I Croatian I fully support this. Ukraine is not in NATO or the EU, therefore our soldiers do not have the obligation to defend the country. End of story.

Everyone says this when it is the “other” who need help. But suddenly, when it is you who needs it, it is everyone else’s obligation to help.

The clickbait aside, when you say such things, you need to take into account that you might have to fight your own war soon, in the foreseeable future, and then you will be alone – because everyone will react like you. In other words, you have a choice – to act now, in a foreign country, or act later, in your own. This does not only apply to Croatia of course.

That’s fine, but then don’t ever expect any other country to help Croatia if they are attacked by another nation, since it’s not ‘their’ war and all. This just stinks of an ‘I’m-alright-Jack’ attitude since they got NATO membership. Ukraine gave up that priviledge on the promise that Russia would never attack them, which Russia reneged on. If you don’t care about the fate of your European neighbours when attacked by a hostile power you don’t deserve any friends or support.

I mean, they’re in NATO, that comes with both pros and cons… One of the cons being that you have a bit less sovereignty when it comes to your defense policy.

Foreign troops would only go there after Russia agreed to stopping the war, and it’s not like this situation wasn’t threatening Europe as a whole. It won’t be Croatia’s presence or absence that deters Russia from regrouping and attacking again in a few years, although Russia not continuing their delusion of rebuilding the Soviet Union is in the interest of Croatia as well. Unless they want a new Soviet Union, though it still wouldn’t benefit the average Croat, or Hungarian, or anybody not on the very top with delusions of grandeur.

Who is he saying this to?
They are a member of both NATO and the EU, so their defence obligations are already pretty much filled, unless they somehow swap to the CRINK side.

I hate populism. Because these words might sound sensible to many people, but if you give it more thought it’s pretty nonsensical. Croatia’s interests could de facto be tangled up in international coalitions that are already part of this stuff. And what does “not other’s people’s wars” actually mean? European security and sovereignty is part of the national interest of Croatia because, surprise, you are in Europe.

I wonder where Croatia would be today if NATO had done the same in the Yugo civil war. Operation Deliberate force was key in enabling Operation Storm.
