There’s this Italian song featuring the lyrics “cambiano i ministri ma non la minestra”. The ministers change but the soup doesn’t.

Until it does, people won’t be any happier.

Hardly surprising. Red Tories are just as shit as blue Tories. Now the purple Tories are waiting in the wings like an even shitter tribute band.

McSweeney be like: just one more step to the right, bro, just one more. I promise it’ll be different this time!!

What Labour need to do is to signal that they are a normal centre-left government. Voters see Labour as a party that looks after poor people. Labour may want to present themselves in a different way but this won’t work. They have to listen to the people. Welfare spending needs to increase. That means increasing the winter fuel allowance, removing the two child cap, and increasing disability benefits.

I’d pay for this by a small wealth tax, perhaps less than 1% would stop wealthy people leaving. That is proven to work in many other countries. If it’s a really really small wealth tax it works. Alongside that they need to raise money from gambling, sugary foods and drinks, alcohol and smoking taxes.

They also need to listen to those who still haven’t got the control they wanted from brexit. This isn’t just about immigration (though this is important), but it is also about giving people more power over their local communities. Labour needs to double-down on expanding the co-operative sector and on devolution so that more decisions are decided locally.

They don’t have to be hard-left as reddit would claim. Just do basic small things that will help people and make you look like a Labour government in the voters’ minds.

Wild that funnily enough, a Labour government doing a vast string of un-Labour things seems to have disappointed Labour voters.

Budget shortfall? Look at what Atlee had to deal with and how his approach revitalised the country. We used to beat up fascists, now they are getting elected as M.P.s Starmer is sabotaging the UK like he’s a puppet for a foreign government. It is the one you can’t criticise without being accused of religious bigotry.

Maybe calling voters paedophiles some more will help?

The same easily distractible, reactive electorate who voted both parties in couldn’t be the problem though, could it

We get the governments we deserve/the city wants

    9. Thanks to the media. They have done more good things than bad since coming into power.

Let’s approach this from a different perspective.

I want to know from a non Labour loving individual. What have they done so far that has made a difference? Don’t give me any of this ‘give them time bollocks’. They’ve had time. They wanted the job.

What have they done that has made this country better? More powerful. Better at looking after those in genuine need of help. More genuine jobs, not just playing around with statistics.

I want an actual law that was put in place and I want the impact of that change that has made positive change for all of us or a sector of society that has benefited and has cost nobody else.

Clearly they need to swing even more to the right, it’s worked so well thus far

    12. outsideruk on

People want comforting lies over hard truths. They want immediate fixes which will worsen the overall situation over tough decisions which will play out over time.

    13. Not surprised, they are pretty much the same thing, only difference is one is still worse than the other but they both appear to be poor choices.

    14. Mattock1987 on

Oh f**k, Reform are going win because we have people here stupid enough to vote for them

    15. DigbyGibbers on

Absolute shit show. It’s sort of hilarious they have no alternative to Starmer even starting to show up.

      WEALTH TAX WEALTH TAX.

The trouble with Labour is they inherited a clusterfuck of issues, most of them Tory.

Austerity meant we failed to grow or recover from the previous recession, Brexit meant we shrank in trading ability, and Covid left us with a legacy of ill people and a fucking big lending bill.

All the while inequality rises to the point it’s a fundamental structural issue with our society, rather than some dinner table ideological musing.

And Starmer’s response is….. sensiblism. Tweak the dials here and there, placate, spread yourself thinly across all spectrums.

It doesn’t work. We don’t need a revolution, or some Farage jackboots burning asylum hotels, or conveniently ignoring the thermometers and reservoir levels. But every now and again you need to be bold, have vision and take a risk on jolting us out of our managed decline.

    17. EuroSong on

They are the Uniparty. Different people but same policies of “managed decline”.

    18. Whammy-Bars on

This will be disappointing news for them, as it will mean there are some people they haven’t managed to alienate or anger yet.

    19. blueberry77772019 on

Sky news? Talking shite about Labour? Naaaa… do people really believe polls anymore? They’ve failed to predict many an election. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like a lot of the policies, but they’re still doing better than the Tories f me. Takes more than a year to make progress on 14 years of absolute ruin. Honestly, I think they’re just stalling for time to justify higher taxes. Perhaps with an actual budget they’ll be able to better? Tax wealth not wages!

    20. Intrepid-Account743 on

Well, they said they were going to do the unpopular stuff first so no surprise.

I’m left wondering if they will ever get to the popular stuff.

      Deep breath–nah, only kidding!
