It seems Nakhimov’s upgrade is finally complete, however the costs of upgrading him and the shifting priorities from the war in Ukraine mean that the planned upgrade to the other Kirov will almost certainly not now happen. The modernisation has supposedly replaced the ship’s 20 [Granit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-700_Granit) missiles with 78 [3S-14 VLS cells](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3S-14) which can carry Kalibr, Oniks or Tsirkon. That loadout makes the strike potential of the ship quite impressive; it’s one of the most heavily armed warships in the world now…however there are signs that even the modernisation of this ship has not been as extensive as was originally planned; it seems that the ship’s SAM’s were upgraded to the ~1990s vintage [S-300FM](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-300_missile_system#Sea-based_S-300FM_(SA-N-20)) instead of a more modern weapon.

This is probably the last hurrah of the giant ships in the Russian Navy; the currently active Kirov – Pyotr Velikiy – will almost certainly be scrapped instead of modernised. The same fate awaits their aircraft carrier. The [Lider class](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_23560_Lider-class_destroyer) that was to replace the Kirovs will almost certainly never be built. The [Gorshkovs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_22350_frigate) – which are more in line with other nation’s surface warships (although still more heavily armed by comparison to most European nation’s warships) – will probably provide the main strike power of the Russian Navy in the future.

Too bad that they can’t bring that thing even close to Ukraine to be converted into a submarine.

I can’t imagine Russia creating an integrated fighting machine. That’s takes rewards for merit, instead of corruption.
