>Putin has no reason to acquiesce at this point. Having made zero concessions, he has been rewarded with a grand summit in Alaska, the dropping of a demand by Trump to sign onto a ceasefire before peace talks, and the crumbling of all sanctions ultimatums to date. The only wild card for Russia at this point is who Trump will blame when this latest peace effort fails.

So if this meeting happens –
Putin “will have to accept the failure of sitting down with a president (Zelensky) he considers a joke from a country that doesn’t exist”. (Orysia Lutsevich)

He will only accept the meeting when his country is about to be bankrupt, which will be sometime this year, hopefully. All threats to him have been empty, why would he accept anything that doesn’t suit him? He has no pressure.

It was all to make the Europeans happy. Putin has no intention to meet zelensky or to end the war, as long as he feels he still can win. The only powers who can change that are China or the USA and both have clearly no intention to.
Russia won’t stop until (all of) Ukraine has surrendered or his system collapses. No matter the costs.

I like better the explanation by Kamil Galeev of why Putin and Zelenski can’t just sit down and talk.
It’s because Zelenski doesn’t belong to the post-Soviet political caste. He isn’t an oligarch, he has no background in security services. He’s a guy who made a successful sitcom and used his *personal* popularity to get elected.
And that’s absolutely unacceptable to Putin. Because Russians indeed see Ukraine as almost the same people, so if a commoner could just run and get elected, the logical question is why does the Russian president have to be appointed by his precedessor. Why can’t he just be elected.
One should note how Poroshenko was much more hawkish than Zelenski was before 2022, yet Putin had no issues negotiating with Poroshenko while he from the day one refused to talk to Zelenski. Yes, because Poroshenko is an oligarch, and Zelenski is just some guy.

This stupid carnival with “peace talks” around Trump and all European attention to this in the hope that their problems will just disappear is just painful.
It is not even about Putin and Zelensky. The war is about Russian expansion to Europe. Russia wants to rule over Europe, Yeltsin told Clinton “leave Europe for us’ in 1999.
Russia will continue until it’s stopped. As it always has been.

When there was a discussion on Reddit about the possibility of a meeting in Alaska, many redditors pointed out that the meeting for Putin was a formal conclusion of the agreements that had already been reached.
If we follow this interpretation, then the meeting between Zelensky and Putin will take place when their assistants, under the control of the Americans, have reached a consensus on key issues.
The article says that Putin will not meet with Zelensky.
I have specifically read the Russian media on this matter.
It writes that Putin said that he could meet with Zelensky, but Zelensky is illegitimate (his status is expired due to the cancellation of the elections, by Putin’s opinion), and the agreement should be signed by Stefanovich (the head of the parliament) and approved by the Ukrainian parliament.

I can hardly imagine how difficult it must be to sit with a smug, lying , mass murderer and listen to him victim blaming … but have to do so ,in order to try and save more of your people from being his victims. And even be forced to reward him for his crimes then see how fast the world drops the sanctions.

As long as Ukraines frontline continues collapsing Russia will never come to the table with any seriousness. Desertions have skyrocketed for the Ukrainians 200k and growing. The manpower shortfalls grow exponentially each day and no amount of aid will curtail that kind of a problem. I don’t think this was something Zelensky could have avoided or something Trump caused because the collapse started back in Bidens term. Russsia would certainly not accept article 5 protections being extended to Ukraine as that would be equivalent to allowing them into NATO which is a non starter for them. Ukraine will need to somehow miraculously stabilize the losses before the end of the year or they could be asked for huge and ridiculous concessions.

I hope Europe finally steps up and stops this “peace talks” nonsense. Neither party is interested, our goal should be Russia leaving 100% of Ukraine and Ukraine a NATO member, anything less is just defeatism.

Well, the “NPP” just evaporated from his fingers. All he did was waste everyone’s time, and allowed Putin to embarrass America on American soil.

Zelenskyy might just hop over that table and kill him. Putin is a pussy. That’s why.
