    1. The difference between a system like this that is just processing against a list + deleting (unless you’re wanted, essentially), vs. storing anything long term or doing anything else, is the difference between nothing and everything.

And because that is such an important difference, there should be ongoing independent auditing of these systems to reassure everyone that they are definitely only doing exactly what they say.

I don’t mind them at all, in theory, but it wouldn’t take much for me to very much mind them.

This technology that can scan and record your face so you can be identified anywhere you go and all your movements can be tracked?

No no no, where would you get the idea we might use this for “Surveillance”. It’s just about keeping the children safe you see.

    3. FlyWayOrDaHighway on

Thank you Dame Diana Johnson, your words give 100% faith in the scheme.

Feeding us bullshit and expecting us to just accept it meanwhile the police are less available and you don’t address the societal issues causing more petty crime. How about you actually address the causes and not the symptoms.

All the government knows is “address the symptoms, not the root cause,” the true UK parliament mentality, through and through.

    4. wkavinsky on

Yes it is, and never let anyone try to tell you differently.

Its **only** purpose is to place a specific person in a specific place.

    5. Sounds like something that someone who wants a total surveillance society would say

    6. Well he’s right, not by itself it isn’t.

*Buuuut* when you add it to all the innumerable, creepy, surveillance, speech suppression & control laws etc. Which the regime uses and abuses every single f*cking time.

Then it is in practice about total surveillance.

    7. Responsible-Kiwi870 on

Palantir are pretty explicit about wanting a total surveillance society with “software that dominates” though, and you keep giving money to them to implement these technology solutions so… I don’t believe you.

    8. UnoriginalWebHandle on

Thing is, it doesn’t need to be total surveillance to have the same effect. Nobody’s sifting through all of this data, but they *could*, and you have no way of knowing when they do. So at all times you must assume that you are being watched. It’s the panopticon.

Well clearly, because people can still put a balaclava on, take a few steaks off the shelf and saunter out like it’s nothing.

I’m not sure Big Brother would have been defeated by the mighty balaclava.

You can’t justify this simply based on the timing.

Pride Pride attracts a similar number of people just in central London alone, and has large gatherings throughout the UK such as Brighton

Metal detectors will be going off tens times as much at Pride, for various reasons

Facial detectors in London haven’t stopped the amount of homophobic attacks each year at Pride, and the very small amount of arrests is pitiful for facial tech to be given any awards for. And it also hasn’t stopped the amount of public sex acts, including taboo sex acts in broad daylight during Pride.

Didn’t Budapest recently get slammed for wanting to use facial recognition tech at major celebration gatherings?

I want facial recognition tech outside Parliament and the results uploaded daily to the parliament website so I can see what time MPs come in for work and what time they go home.

      [edit for clarity]

Jez, how clueless, yes it is. Add in the upcoming spying on people’s bank accounts, when and where they go on holiday, age verification, etc. UK is absolutely a total surveillance state.

    12. JackStrawWitchita on

Just imagine the right-wing dystopian horror Britain will be if Farage and his right wing cohort are elected into Downing St and take command and control of this surveillance technology to further their own agenda…

    13. Antique_Historian_74 on

For instance if you live in a wealthy majority white neighbourhood you’ll only encounter this technology when you travel into an urban centre. So there’s nothing to worry about.

    14. Comfortable-Law-7147 on

The last Labour government tried to bring in ID cards while CCTV surveillance increased.

I guess it’s a Labour government sticking to form.

    15. Whodini97 on

I get why people are upset about this and how it’s an invasion of privacy etc. Educate me if I’m being thick but part of me thinks if you’ve not done anything wrong what’s the issue?

    16. John_Williams_1977 on

Oh no! The Government that has my health records might know I was recently at Tesco.

      Orwell warned us!

    17. EmileTheDevil9711 on

It’s not about total surveillance, it’s about total oppression.

    18. bobcat_bedders on

Lets put it outside parliament and track how many MPs are turning up to do their job 👍

    19. InformationNew66 on

Can politicians do anything else than lie nowdays?

The litmus test for any technology like this is “what if a dictator got in power, how much would it help them oppress people”?

    20. DufaqIsDis on

Facial recognition technology has nothing to do with your face. /s

    21. CedricTheCurtain on

After over a decade of tech companies saying the same thing before following through with data acquisition, why would anyone believe a government (contracting tech companies) saying the same thing?

    22. plawwell on

Plod don’t keep anybody safe as they usually run in the other direction, or are too busy surfing social media for naughty words being posted. Now the intentions might not be to use it to track people and surveil them today, but good intentions are corrupted by those in power. People in power look at the tools they have and how they can change them to maximise their policy requirements. In other words, when you open the door slightly then it’s blasted open. Happens every time and people who say “not this time” are liars.

    23. No_Assistance_14 on

I fully support the police having facial recognition technology. Anything that helps the police catch criminals is a good thing

    24. llamaz314 on

I’m not sure what the point of this is though because I’d bet MI5 can already use CCTV to track down anyone they want. It’s just the police using it and being able to identify who people are won’t do anything because the vast majority of police are understaffed and won’t do anything about most minor crimes. Plus most criminals are smart enough to wear a mask (Isn’t that the number 1 rule of crime?)

    25. ConfusedQuarks on

So facial recognition systems everywhere. And for absolutely unrelated reasons, we are asked to verify with IDs or videos whenever we are accessing “adult” sites. Nothing to see here guys. Move on.
