The same set of data shows that the government has managed to reduce the backlog of asylum claims by a quarter on the previous year. It also shows that there was a 25% increase in the number of people forcibly sent back from the UK compared to the previous year. But let’s ignore that kind of information and just focus on the stuff that will get a knee-jerk response from Reform supporters.
Why are all the media including the BBC and Guardian just regurgitating this with no context – provided here by other commenters? It’s not even remarkable – 8% is a really small number and not surprising given that it is late summer, a third of boat crosses are housed in hotels and that is the overflow option
