Not hard for micro states lol, if Amazon would decide to be based in a baltic country the GDP per capita would increase to half a million.

What about the Tajik way?
REPULSORO on
Well, Russia now has a GDP per capita of 20 thousand, not 14, because the IMF uses the old forecast exchange rate, and not the one that exists now.

These countries are part of the EU, what have they achieved specifically except for sucking out the Western grants? Russia and every other post Soviet country had to build their economies all by themselves
It’s quite showing that if you actually compare the Baltics against other EU nations they’re gonna be way down the list at the very bottom, that successful they have been

GDP is a flawed measure. Use PPP to measure.

I guess on Reddit it’s not necessary to point out how far down Russia would be without oil, gas, gold, diamonds, coal etc. etc. that they simply extract and ship abroad? All of which Baltics do not have… On the other hand, without those natural resources there would be no Putin and no imperial ambitions, no wars with neighbors etc. Maybe they would even have a more or less democratic government. That damned resource curse…

The outlier here seems Azerbaijan to me, aside for Ukraine that is dragged down by the war.

There is a catch though. Fewer population – larger PER CAPITA.

Surprised that Azerbaijan is so low when it is an oil economy, but it probably has a major wealth gap and apparently many were below the poverty line in 2012,

The most important “data” is that people of these countries have made it very clear numerous times that the russian way is not our way

Meanwhile, tankies will keep insisting that Baltics are “shitholes” and they no longer have any industry.

How was Turkmenistan so comparatively rich in 1995?

I don’t want to argue about the politics part but isn’t choosing 1995 just 4 years after dissolution of the Soviet Union, the structure in which their economies existed, a bit of a bad comparing point?
Or what exactly is meant with the “european or russian” dichotomy?

Looking at Russia – let me guess – the price of oil from 1995 to 2025 increased by a factor of 6, right?

The most shocking thing here to me is actually how different the numbers are for the Central Asian countries in 1995.

Yes but the GDP per Capita is not the best indicator. By that logic the Irish way would have been the best lol.

But GDP PPP per capita (2025).
Estonia * 49,671 2025
Russia * 49,383 2025
Using this metric, the table kinda stayed the same (except Ukraine).

For people it’s good going democracy way. Sure it’s flawed, but generally speaking, most of population is better off this way.
If you are a small group who wants to be rich and hold all the power, the soviet way is better, people don’t matter here that much.
Simple as that.
You are saying it like no one knows this.

By the ranking alone it doesn’t seem like a big change. The Baltic nations went for 1st, 4th and 5th to 1st, 2nd and 3rd while Russia went from 2nd to 4th.
If you give Ukraine a pass for “external factors” affecting their 2025 standing, I think the main takeaway is to not be like Belarus.

Estonia has done an incredible job since breaking from Soviet rule—unlike Ukraine’s struggle. But the reality is bleak: Estonia feels like an innocent man on death row, working hard, keeping in shape, being the model citizen—yet execution still looms. They’ve done everything right, but without stronger backing, it’s still a no-win situation. Frankly, Estonia should be an American state. Get the protection and the possibility to bloom further. ( joking )
