In 2018, Germany and France started the MAWS project to provide a replacement for both countries maritime patrol aircrafts, but Germany decided in 2021 that it couldn’t wait until the MAWS was ready and ordered 5 P-8A as an interim solution (after refusing a French offer for 4 ATL2 as a stop gap measure). Then 3 more in 2023. All while pretending MAWS was not dead.
And now 4 more in 2025. One more interim US solution becomes permanent. A great opportunity loss, matching requirements, export potential, etc.
