It seems crazy that there isn’t more of a strategy in place. Obviously we need to allow some of these, but how many, where, and how? If the multinationals leave but the data centres stay how will we afford the infrastructure cost?

their 2 separate systems , the cost people pays have nothing to with data centers , ( in fact most have their own generation solar etc )

Data centres pay for the power and also bring in tax revenue which the ESB and government should be using for network upgrades. Why would the public be hit with increases.

“Government wants data centres but has no plan for them”

Question, if anyone knows: are any of these data Centres AI centric? Curious given the repeated warning about AI’s environmental damage, and if alongside everything else the strain is partly slop based.

This will only increase, like the rise of AI.

Places such as Singapore (digital services nation) have put a cap on the national percent available for use by data centres.

They can’t pay towards the consumption no, just the households is it.

Now is not the time to be pissing off corporations being lured back to the states, we should be investing in our energy grid.

So contrary to the rhetoric of the usual suspects that insist Data centres cost less than boiling a kettle, they actually do have an impact on our energy and bills? I’m shocked. These things need to be cut back.

    10. Government chases money while neglecting the citizens that elected them, yet again. They’ve been like this the entirety of my life. Something has to give.

When did the unit of measurement change from kWh to Kilkenny’s? And when will my smart meter reflect this change?

    12. Bredius88 on

Every data centre should be forced to **supply all of its own power**!

What gobshite thought putting power thirsty factories on an island in the atlantic completely delinquent of any decent power infrastructure would be a good idea?

They employ like 10 people each, they consume massive resources, destroy the little infrastructure we have, make us totally dependent on foreign power, give practically nothing back to the community, and pay fuck all corporation tax.

      Greedy gobshites strike again

    14. Wait what? Increased demand increases the cost of goods? Who could have predicted such a thing? Why don’t they teach this semester 1 of every business class for the hundreds of years?

    15. gunited85 on

They’re paying the council, for planning, paying for the roads and surrounding areas..if you removed all the pictures in people’s phones… might not be a demand.. average female has up to 15k plus photos in there phone…. now whose to blame

Every conversation about datacenters glosses over what we use them for, virtually everything digital in our lives.

Government services, utilities, banks, hospitals, businesses literally everything. Anything you interact with in a digital way.

The problem is with power infrastructure not datacenters.

Ah yes, it must be that time of the month again when we all gather ‘round to terrify Ireland with tales of evil data centers sneaking in at night and nicking everyone’s electricity.
