For Ukrainians, the blue and yellow flag is more than a symbol — it has been present at nearly every milestone of our nation’s modern history. It flies over its key buildings, its colours are painted onto bridges and murals, and it accompanies people through life’s defining moments.

Since Russia launched its war in 2014, the flag has also taken on the heaviest duty of all: to cover Ukraine’s fallen defenders as they are brought home with honour.

On Ukraine’s Flag Day, Vadym Dovhoruk of the 3rd Special Forces recalls how the flag links today’s defenders with those who held Donetsk airport in 2014 — a battle that became a symbol of Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s invasion.
