>A performance at the Nosi se festival in Benkovac was canceled after a group of war veterans staged a protest. Festival organizer and journalist Melita Vrsaljko reported being surrounded, insulted, and physically attacked while attempting to film the protest from a public space. She claims police did not intervene despite repeated calls for help.

>Around 100 protesters, including members of the Zadar fan groups Torcida and Tornado, marched to the venue chanting “Za dom spremni” (a WWII-era fascist salute). Visitors fled in fear, with some describing the atmosphere as “terrifying” and “chaotic.”

>Vrsaljko published a video showing that protesters shouted misogynistic insults, threatened to run her over, and that one man struck her, attempting to knock her phone away. Actress Maruška Aras said that she filmed all sorts of things, while they were shouting at her that she is a whore and a mistake of nature, and at Melita that she should be thrown under a car because she’s a provocateur, while about thirty so-called concerned police officers were ‘protecting’ them, yet at the same time hugging the group that was shouting ‘Za dom spremni’ through them.

She described the incident as part of a “broader right-wing revolution” fueled by growing radicalization, adding: “This kind of protest does not belong in a democratic society. Citizens can choose not to attend an event, but they cannot intimidate others into silence.”

>The Nosi se festival (Aug 22–29) is dedicated to deconstructing war and violence while promoting nonviolence, solidarity, and pluralism through performances, films, and discussions. It is organized by Teatro VeRRdi (Zadar) with support from the Croatian Ministry of Culture, the City of Benkovac, and other institutions. Police have opened an investigation into the incident.
