I mean, this was supposed to be the plan if LOA 2/3 was to happen as the government allegedly wishes. I appreciate that this is the entire point of the DPER but they sorta seem to take the view that the most effective way to handle public finances is to do as little capital spending as possible.
At the very least we should be able to monitor our skies and waters.
The department of defence already did a report on the cost of outfitting the defence forces to do different jobs woth 3 levels of spending.
Given this is honestly needed and they’ve already very clearly outlined where the money would go Im all for it.
Spending on the military here is essentially like paying for insurance but on a national level. Given the global situation currently it makes sense to essentially pay a higher premium on insuring our national interest over the coming decade.
Here’s a link to the detailed plan the DF have for what they want by 2028

The fact we can’t even send out are few navy ships because we don’t have enough qualified people to operate them is a disgrace.
Ireland at a minimum should be able to police our own waters and skies be it from foreign military incursions or vessels committing crimes like smuggling or poaching.
We can’t do that if we are still paying service members a pittance and giving them equipment that was out of date before we even got it.
The only way to solve that is with more money.
Anyone who pretends it is useless to upgrade our military because we couldn’t put up a fight against Russia or the likes is just being an idiot.
Let this warmonger sort out poorly funded/managed current problems before spending money on the hypothetical.
This is what happens when you let civil servants in DPER have notions way beyond their station. Thinking their only job is to crunch numbers like junior accountants and have no regard for investing in the State is truly shocking and to think any serious senior DPER Civil Servant would think that level of spending would be ok is almost a sackable offence for incompetence. Ireland is borderline meeting the criteria for geopolitical cowards now acting like parasitic slieveens on the coat tails of other nations security spending whilst taunting our GDP wealth at the same time. This DPER decision is just bad politics bad thinking bad governance , I hope Paschal & Co have a rocket put up their arse and are reminded how mature nations defend their interests ….
I’m 100% in support of increased spending for defence. We’ve benefited so much from the post Cold War peace, but we can’t keep pretending that neutrality means we’re safe from attack or aggression from another country.
So many people I talk to about this think that our neutrality means we’re invulnerable to aggression. This is not at all the case, look at other neutral states, they guarantee their neutrality through having strong defences.
I’m not against upping defence spending, but you ever notice whenever the left suggests investing in health, housing and education the response is “How will we pay for it?” But the same argument is never used against defence, lol
