Obviously the main component of the loyal wingman concept is not the drones themselves but the autonomous software needed to make them feasible. Still, Had Germany continued barracuda development, they would only need to collaborate on the software with other countries.

I think you can find plenty of examples like these where politicians didn’t have the same vision engineers did. Long term planning requires long term thinking which I’m not sure is part of a politician skillset.

In France we have the very sad prototype of the Hermes program which is arguably even sadder than this.

Tale as old as the BRD politicans strangle a ground breaking new industry/concept/product in one way or another only to buy it from outside of Germany again.

One of the is compatible with the F35, the other one wouldn’t have integrated by Lockmart in a million years

There were two Barracuda prototypes, one is located in a museum nowadays.

But in general, form follows function.

    6. This is a recurring issue in German engineering for the past 150 or more years.

Engineers come up with a revolutionary design, but politicians fail to understand it and the project is cancelled only to be called ahead of its time decades later. Being an engineer can be insanely frustrating.
