Civil servant under all different governments have wanted to have as much of your personal data as possible; I think that there is a “Yes Minister” episode about it from the 1970’s.

    2. I use apple products for the expected privacy vs the google based alternatives. If apple were to cave on these types of requests I’d be less inclined to keep buying their products. I know most people don’t care about privacy anymore but I think they’d at least lose many of those customers who do value it. If my data isn’t safe with any of the big manufacturers, my purchasing options open up all of a sudden.

We’re just as bad as Russia or China these days when it comes to the Internet. It’s more subtle but is gradually being revealed for what it is.

I presume since Google, Microsoft, Meta etc. are never mentioned in relation to this story it’s because they are fine with it?

Would love to be corrected but the pessimistic part of me thinks I won’t be.

It becomes ever harder to say that Labour doesn’t seek to create a total surveillance state with all the rules and attempts that they are making (along with the Tories previously) to get and monitor people on a constant basis.

It’s authoritarianism 101 to want all this data, just like the Republicans have been in the US, and just like the Stasi did in East Germany.

And it’s all being done under the moniker of “think about the children” – the end result of which is going to be a crippling inability to do the things that will actually help protect children.
