I cannpt tell if 2008-2014 counts as a huge increase. X60-X84 Intentional self-harm
CMAT is a very good songwriter (the new album is brilliant) and she singing abut her experience not being a statistician. But I though it was worth looking at the stats.

My parents were civil/public servants so I was somewhat insulated from the boom and bust as a teenager, but some my classmates definitely lived the high life like Penny in the article and felt the crash afterwards. A few emigrated to Aus/NZ particularly if the father had a trade.
Some stayed rich, which is even more puzzling now?

As someone whose dad is sadly one of those people in the numbers shared, firstly, its heartbreaking to think of families getting that news like we did. Its an awful complicated grief.
The figures are most definitely under reported, some overdoses/car accidents are going to be intentional but are not classed as suicide. Also some coroners won’t classify a death as suicide unless someone has basically left a note behind explicitly saying it.

My father, although he didn’t kill himself, suffered 4 strokes having to deal with the pressure of getting screwed by the banks and losing everything he ever worked for to the vulture funds . It was shocking what they got away with .

I became a single parent in 2010 to 3 kids. I don’t think i will ever recover from the trauma of having no money at all. I went from being in a good place to having nothing in a year. It completely ruined my experience of motherhood it was a totally wretched time.

I could never relate to any of this, thankfully. My family were poor. Single parent who worked multiple jobs to get by. Poor during the boom and during the recession. Nothing to lose 😅
I do feel for families affected. I hear lots of awful stories from people I work with.
