“Analysis of the 50 biggest housing transactions in the country this year showed 31 deals related to parties bulk-buying multiple homes in new housing schemes.

Twenty-six new developments were purchased by a charity, council, approved housing body (AHB) or agency in receipt of state funding. On average, they spent about €400,000 on each home. A majority of the homes were bought in high-demand areas such as Dublin and nearby commuter areas.”

The middle class is funding these groups with its own tax yet never available to avail of their offerings.

Scientists at Harvard recently discovered that the only thing rarer than promethium (atomic number 61) is the Irish State acting in the financial interest of the average taxpayer.

DmcW did a podcast on it recently, mentions that Ireland now has the world’s most expensive council houses.

The state has quietly become the biggest buyer of new homes. In fact, builders like Cairn Homes now have forward sales of nearly €946 million, much of it locked in by government deals. That means up to 80–85% of new builds are being bought by the state, at an average price of €382,000

What’s the trick to view the article without paying for it?

    6. Conscious_Handle_427 on

So the middle class pay most of tax (bar corporation tax) only to be outbid with their own money to give new houses to people that don’t work?

    7. miju-irl on

The tax money of those paying it being weaponised against them.

It’s an impossible square to circle – the government (through the local authorities) can’t clear even the numbers in hotels despite:

      – pumping literal billions into new public housing estates
      – getting 10% of all new private builds
      – subsiding a seemingly endless list of AHBs to take tenants off the list

I live in a private development in Dublin 8. Meant to be 90% private. In reality it’s 90% public due to what I’ve described above. We’re paying nearly 2k a month to be mired in the collective squalor of people that refuse to maintain cleanliness and order in common areas.

It’s a quiet crisis people never talk about – working professionals paying over the nose (if they’re lucky) to end up being housed next door to people who pay €20 a week, and those people feel like they’re paying too much.

It’s OK. The state not only charge me stupid tax but use it agaiant me to house people who won’t work.

It’s my own fault though. I voted for this government last time. Not next time. I don’t care who gets in once they get punished.

The big idea is to have middle classes renting for life so that their income can be monetized until they die in the form of rents paid to investment banks like Goldmans and BlackRock. The Irish government is using their playbook.

County councils are paying big money for houses outbidding workers trying to buy houses .The councils then give the houses to those who don’t work for 45 Euro a week out of their dole. An Irish ethnic group are the main beneficiaries

    12. fitfoemma on

Local councils getting into bidding wars on 2nd hand homes is a disgrace.

Once a public bid comes in, the Council should be forced to withdraw.

Ah it’s the Indo, you can expect gutter journalism.

They’re complaining that the government is buying social housing

    14. I cant be the only one who’s given up on ever owning a home? Im 38 and i now know there’s no point. I earn enough now but with my age, my wife’s age, it will just never happen
