Rules don’t permit editorialising titles, but in 2022 it was 13 people, up to 18 in 2023 and now 51 in the first half of 2024 alone.

A steep rise, yes, but a tiny fraction of the overall context.

The article doesn’t seem to state how many have been *successful* in their claims.

Wasting their time, and our resources. Pretty much the only scenario in which a US citizen will qualify for asylum in Ireland is if they’re likely to be subjected to the death penalty in the US. Otherwise they’re basically guaranteed to be sent home

    3. Well….the article could at least give the reasons and if some of them are valid…. I seem to remember reading a couple years ago that Germany gave a US soldier who did not want to return to Afghanistan temporary asylum….

Asylum??? Insert anecdote about the late great Hannibal Lector here.

To be capable of claiming asylum they must be unable to be safe in any part of their country and be unable to obtain protection from the state. It’s hard to imagine any American who meets this.

I have no issues with Americans coming here but Americans claiming asylum are taking the piss
