Terrible. People going about their business and this happens. Just out of nowhere. Makes you think how fragile we all are.
I’m sorry for everyone affected. May they find healing.

Posting because unfortunately my cousin witnessed the whole thing from nearby. He said the wreck was so mangled you couldn’t even recognize it as a tram anymore. Jesus Christ… RIP [*]

I went up on that funicular years ago. There are always many people. What a shame, poor people.

God, how many tourists came on this tram and had a good time. And now this misfortune
What a tragedy
The tram’s maintenance was outsourced to a private company two years ago and Carris’ workers made multiple complaints about its lack of proper maintenance.
Great job as usual from that waffle of a Mayor and his “private sector always does it better” friends.
In addition, to make this even better, I have a strong suspicion this will create a political crisis in Portugal and might even mean snap elections.
PSD is an extremely fragile position, the “let’s outsource state functions to the private sector” is their thing, and Lisbon mayor Carlos Moedas is PSD’s #2 after the PM for all intents and purposes.

Horrible horrible news. I’ve always loved Lisbon (and Portugal) and I’ve always been fascinated by the trams. Sinto muito meus irmãos 🇵🇹❤️

Authorities say that cables snapped, it then derailed and probably rolled down the hill hitting the building. This is Gloria funicular, it can hold up to 42 passenges, so it’s not clear if the funicular hit pedestrians

Didn’t the cable cars earn a reputation of being badly maintained? Of course after privatisation took place.
PS: Was to Lisbon years ago and still remember the ride.

Portuguese here living in UK. Just saw this in the news.
What a tragedy. The train is not even recognisable.
Apparently a cable snapped, or became loose, and gravity did the rest. This is a very steep street.
For all victims’ families and friends, and those who witnessed this tragedy. My thoughts go out to you and I’m sorry you all went through.

I walked up and down every day just a few weeks ago while on vacation. Such a popular spot. Absolutely awful for all those who passed 😔

Absolutely heartbreaking, my thoughts are with the victims and their families and I really can’t imagine the shock for those who witnessed it
