Ah *lovely*! A comforting, classic amputation fraud fetish news story to round off my week.

    2. Ivashkin on

      > Neil Hopper, 49, of Truro, Cornwall, carried out hundreds of amputation operations before having his own legs removed in 2019.

I guess the real question here is how many cases where he recommended amputation really required amputation, and how many people are missing body parts today as a result of his “sexual interest in amputation”.

    3. workfricets on

      >It heard that in May 2019 Hopper had below knee amputations after a “mysterious illness”. In fact he had used ice and dry ice to freeze his own legs so they had to be removed, the court heard.

      What?! Why?

      >It heard Hopper had a “sexual interest in amputation”.

      I hate this planet.

    4. LookOverall on

He clearly had body dismorphia, which is a fortunately rare condition in which certain parts of your body feel so wrong and alien that you seek amputation. I don’t know where the idea that it’s anything to do with sex comes from, except it’s our culture’s default explanation for anything weird.

When they said “go out on a limb,” he took it a bit too literally.

One massive downside of a national health service is that if this bloke has amputated a load of limbs unnecessarily to satisfy his own urges then we, the tax payer will be on the hook for the compensation to the victims. It could be a staggering amount of money, tens of millions.

    7. BathFullOfDucks on

It seems like he had to admit the fraud, his defence really didn’t have a leg to stand on.

    8. Sad_Calligrapher6426 on

Well, so much for “Do until others as…” being a good rule.

I like how the BBC link also has the original story when it was still believed to be sepsis

      > An NHS vascular surgeon who had his own legs removed has admitted two counts of insurance fraud and three of possessing extreme pornography.

      > Neil Hopper, 49, of Truro, Cornwall, carried out hundreds of amputation operations before having his own legs removed in 2019.

This is a head trip to read. Just when you think you’ve seen how weird and evil humans can be, you stumble across something much worse.

    11. TheGardenBlinked on

This is a fetish, isn’t it

      Then I read the article

    12. Round-Tradition-3890 on

Realising you no longer have legs has to be the worst kind of post nut clarity.

    13. ForPortal on

Dr. Hopper had both his legs amputated. Missed opportunity there.

    14. A tangentially related philosophical question,
So let’s assume for the sake of argument that, His legs were perfectly fine When he got them amputated (since that’s not established Legally),

And since now he doesn’t have them,

can he still claim disability benefits?

He is disabled but due to his own decisions,

Now putting that on its head,

let’s say everyone has a surgery to Give themselves super legs, but you don’t do the procedure and so in comparison to everyone else in society You are disabled?

      Should you get disability Benefits?

    15. Feeling-Ad9577 on

With all the evidence against him, he didn’t have a leg to stand on

    16. Outrageous_Koala5381 on

it seems the main problem here, and the jail time was £450k insurance fraud for a injury he faked! From current evidence – and I’m sure they’d say if there was a doubt, he didn’t persuade people to have amputations that didn’t need them – but he “liked” the amputations. And the reason he was caught was because of connection to the far worse body modification sicko.

    17. RainbowRedYellow on

So insurance fraud. Yeah fine get him on that.

Extreme pornography? Like I don’t really care presumably alot of these people have BIDD and want their limbs removed assuming it’s consentual I don’t care. He used the method that alot of those with BIDD use to get their limbs hacked off (dry ice then forcing the surgeons hand)

Like alot of commenters It’s a concern if he misdiagnosed any of his patients. I wouldn’t disagree with an inquiry.

But again like 2 years? For like having a really weird kink and watching videos of amputees. Like not your kink don’t watch it we need to actually separate our own disgust from actual measurable harm this is why our system is unjust.

      More important shit to prosecute.

Missed a trick there didn’t he. Hopper? Should have left one on!
