Literally not beating the son of Blair accusation. What the hell is a digital ID scheme going to do, every employer is already legally required to check for every employee’s right to work, especially foreigner’s right to work.
Given that you already need to provide proof before you can get a job or home I don’t see how it will make any difference?
It sounds like Blair has been sticking his oar in again.
France has ID cards. Spain has ID cards. Germany has ID cards. They all have illegal immigration problems.

Digital driving licences are literally being introduced at the end of this year – this was news to me personally I had no idea until the other day.
Nobody uses a wallet anymore so being able to show my driving licence via Apple Wallet is not something I’ll be complaining about personally.
So digital IDs in one form or another are coming anyway, to be honest I’m not really sure why people are so against it, it’s not giving the government any information they don’t already have (and more) about us.
They manage fine with this in many US states and they’re typically considered more anti “big-government” measures than we are.
This is a totally reasonable proposal, but this thread will be brigaded by paranoid wackos just like every other time this issue is posted.
I used to be against this when I was younger, but the world has changed, I now carry several forms of ID on me anyway, and now we need ID to vote, a government ID just makes sense.
Make it free, and do something like the NI card, but instead you get sent an application in time for your 16th birthday its good.
Incorporate the Driving Licence so we also get a physical card and it’s spot on.
People turn up without any ID at all and we legally have to take them in… so they’ll just do the same with no digital ID 😂

The vast majority of people already have an electronic ID or several, it’s owned by a company and you can’t use it. You can view it but you can’t present it traditionally like a physical ID.
Your credit file is probably the most well-known and shared. Which the government even uses..stupidly paying for it as well.
I have worked on automating ID checks many times with many companies and it’s always an absolute shitshow of productivity dilution and waste. That’s before you even get to the data leaks and selling it to other firms.
The EU are looking to do something for the online age checks, where no personal details are presented or shared but you confirm your age. It’s that type of use case they should be plugging.

Why do we need another card? You already need a NI number to work, which illegals cant get, so what’s the point of yet another number?
Driving licence, passport, NI card are already there and can be carried. Why would you need yet another ID card?
An id is fine. Next it will be linked to biometric info and face scans because those migrants are cloning them. Then it will be linked to opening a bank account or starting a contract (phone electric mortgage). If you don’t have one you can’t use those services. Next it will be your polling card with your own personal block chain to insure YOUR vote isn’t tampered with.
Do something the state sees as a crime your I’d is taken away. No bank no paper money no employment… Sounds like a joke doesn’t it……. Best just toe the line and agree that the “bad guys” need to be stopped and this is the only way of doing it.

Anyway rant over I will just order my shopping to be delivered at home pick up what I need from Amazon never leave the house and get all my news from outlets and social media that are owned by the same mega corpos, they will tell me who what to think and who to hate and don’t disagree… You might get your id taken away.
They’re desperate to get this ID thing through under any guise they can dream up. And if politicians are that desperate for me to have it, it’s very likely not in my best interest.

I’m not opposed to ID cards but I also don’t see how this solves the problem, just force illegal immigrants into unbelievably shit living conditions until we deport them, disincentivise them coming here.

They don’t need an ID, what they need is to be put in a UNHCR run camp before they are deported for having committed the crime of entering the country illegally.
Great bring it on. Everyone going on about “but the gov will track us…” while using a phone that tracks your every move and apps like Facebook YouTube and instagram which know more about you and your habits than you do yourself.
If the aim is solely to tackle illegal immigration, why not have a proof of citizenship card? It does not need to be linked to personal ID at all.
Oh, the actual aims are far more insidious and authoritarian, and Starmer is just using immigration as a fig leaf..
This is needed, the Estonian X-road model is adopted in parts of Scandinavia, it works well and helps reduce Fraud and a bunch of other issues. It makes life easier, promotes transparency in a single portal and can federate data to third parties with your consent, eg banks/utilities, that saves filling forms in. It’s bonkers we have no complete ID for citizens. NI/UPN/NHS numbers are weak controls that try to fill the gap, but are easily circumvented by criminals.
It’s nothing to do with illegal migration, it’s just a control measure for the rest of the population

Anyone who’s seriously interested in tackling illegal immigration should welcome this with open arms. This is one of those few cases where the viewpoints really are mutually exclusive – the price you pay for not having to identify yourself is that nobody else has to either.
Having an overarching identity system is just a good idea. I grew up with one, so I’m biased, but ex. Denmark doesn’t have noticeable illegal immigration. I think the latest estimates put the number at shy of 30k in the country at any given time, or 5‰ of the population – essentially a rounding error.
