**An investigation has begun into how the phone was planted near the front bench in a serious breach of parliamentary security**

The parliamentary authorities have mounted an investigation after a mobile phone was hidden in the Commons as part of a prank to broadcast “sex noises” during prime minister’s questions.

The Times has been told that the phone was planted near the front bench and was intended to go off as Sir Keir Starmer faced Kemi Badenoch in the Commons. It was due to play a sexually explicit audio recording.

However, the phone was found during a routine sweep before prime minister’s questions on Wednesday. There was no clear footage of the mobile being planted.

The incident is being treated seriously as it represents a major breach of parliamentary security. A source said: “It looks like it was just a prank but it could have been much worse.”

They raised concerns that it could have been some kind of explosive, adding: “We don’t know how it got there.”

The phone was found on Wednesday morning when hundreds of security staff based in the Houses of Parliament were on strike over pay and conditions. As a result visitors were banned from the Parliamentary estate, suggesting that the phone may have been planted earlier in the week. The chamber is open to the public on most mornings and the attempted prank bears similarities to an audio from a pornographic video being played during a live broadcast of Match of the Day in 2023.
Noises from a clip were heard on BBC One as Gary Lineker presented the pre-match build-up before a fixture between Wolves and Liverpool. A planted mobile phone was subsequently discovered and a YouTube prankster claimed responsibility.

The BBC apologised to any viewers who were offended. Lineker later disclosed that the mobile phone was “taped to the back of the set” and described it as a “good prank”. He said there was nothing to apologise for.The latest incident was one of the biggest breaches of parliamentary security in years. In 2019 a group of semi-naked climate change protesters interrupted a House of Commons Brexit debate and glued their hands to the glass of the public gallery.

They spent almost 20 minutes with their buttocks facing the chamber. In 2015 a group of disability campaigners clashed with police inside the House of Commons after they tried to storm the chamber during prime minister’s questions to protest against benefit cuts.
